Kate and Humphrey are eager to spend the upcoming winter with their family. Their three pups Stinky, Claudette and Runt are playing, when they are attacked by a big grizzly bear, but are saved by rogue wolves, however Runt vanishes. Once word about Runt's disappearance is brought to the pups' family, they look for Runt, but they spy rogue wolves having captured Runt heading to Banff National Park, home to the rogue wolf pack. The day comes when an old watchdog becomes useless but the masters being kind decide not to drive him away. However they turn exasperated when the Dog stays indifferent during a burglary. The Dog is kicked out and goes to the forest, where he meets the Wolf, his old enemy. The Dog and the Wolf are both old, so they understand they can't be just enemies. The Wolf stages a kidnapping to help his mate and the Dog "rescues" the child. The Dog is welcomed back to the khutor (the farmstead) and continues managing his old duty. The winter comes and one evening the Dog hears the howl of the Wolf. The Dog remembers to repay the Wolf's kindness. He helps the Wolf to infiltrate the house where there is wedding in progress and feeds him with viands from table. Becoming tipsy from filling meal, alcohol and warm house, the Wolf reveals starts to howl his "song". He howls and the Dog has to cast the mate away from the house. The Wolf thanks the Dog and the best friends bid farewell.

Balto's son Kodi works for the US Mail. Kodi loves his job and his new friends Dusty, Kirby and Ralph. Balto is intrigued by the new bush plane that has arrived in Nome. Balto and his mate Jenna have a new family of six puppies. Five of their puppies look like their husky mother, while one pup named Aleu clearly takes her looks from her wolfdog father. When they all reach eight weeks old, all of the other pups are adopted to new homes, but no one wants Aleu due to her wild animal looks and half-bred characteristics. Aleu stays with her father, Balto. A year later, after she is almost killed by a hunter, Balto tells Aleu the truth about her wolf heritage. In anger and sadness, she runs away, hoping to find her place in the world. Balto then goes out to find her. At the same time, Jenna arrives home from a picnic with Rosie (the same girl that was the only person who liked the former outcast Balto and whom Balto delivered a bottle of anti-toxin to cure her of a past sickness) and Boris informs her that Aleu ran away and Balto went out to find her. Jenna tries to go after them, but Boris tells her that only Balto can bring her back.

Wolf (Patrick Warburton), Granny (Glenn Close), and Twitchy (Cory Edwards) are on a rescue mission to save Hansel and Gretel (Bill Hader and Amy Poehler) from an evil witch named Verushka (Joan Cusack). In Canada's Jasper National Park, Kate begins Alpha school with her father and grows up as a fully trained Alpha, but on her first hunt she crosses paths with two wolves from the Eastern pack who are lacking food in their own territory and nearly start a war. Mowgli, a young orphan boy, is found in a basket in the deep jungles of India by Bagheera, a black panther who promptly takes him to a mother wolf who has just had cubs.
