Synopsis
Aurelio, un homme blanc originaire de Mexico, partage la vie rude des Indiens de la côte de Tabasco. Il se consacre à la pêche au requin. Manela, une jeune métisse amoureuse de lui, devient sa maîtresse, à la suite d'un accord contracté par sa famille. Mais, Aurelio a également une épouse et quatre enfants établis dans la capitale. Pressé par sa famille, Aurelio vend son bateau et rentre à Mexico, avec comme perspective la codirection d'une entreprise de transport. Mais, cette nouvelle existence, confortable et conventionnelle, ne le satisfait point. Il renoue alors avec son métier de pêcheur et avec Manela.Actors

À Tlayucan, Chabela et Eufemio sont un couple de paysans heureux jusqu'au jour où leur fils Nicolás tombe gravement malade. Désargentés, ils ont recours à un guérisseur, Tomás. Celui-ci exige, en compensation, que Chabela se donne à lui. Eufemio recherche alors une aide financière, mais en vain... Il se voit contraint de voler une perle d'une statue de l'église. Mais, il finit par égarer celle-ci. Soupçonné, il est enfermé en prison. Pourtant, les villageois obligent Tomás à verser l'argent nécessaire à la guérison de Nicolás. D'un autre côté, Eufemio est libéré par manque de preuves. Ce dernier retrouve la perle et la rétablit sur la statue. Le curé de Tlayucan évoque un miracle du Créateur.

In 1699, William Kidd (Charles Laughton), a pirate who has recently captured the ship The Twelve Apostles and killed its crew, presents himself at the court of King William III (Henry Daniell) as an honest shipmaster seeking royal backing. With this backing, he recruits a crew from the inmates of Newgate and Marshalsea prisons, promising them a royal pardon at the end of their voyage. Among the new recruits is the quarrelsome, though cultured Adam Mercy (Randolph Scott), whom Kidd makes his new master gunner because of his claimed prior service with a famous pirate.

In the days just after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the American people are asking "Where is our navy? Why doesn't it fight?" Gravely weakened by the disaster, the Navy comes up with a plan to trap the Japanese fleet, by using one carrier as several ships to deceive the Japanese Navy into heading for Midway, where a showdown with them will be planned. Meanwhile, on the carrier charged with the mission, flight commander Bingo Harper (Don Ameche) is in charge of the bomber crews on one of the aircraft carriers that shouldered the burden in the desperate early days of the war. He is tough and sticks to the rules, while his young pilots behave more like youngsters and do not always follow his logic.

The film is set in Fort-de-France, in the French colony of Martinique, in the summer of 1940, shortly after the fall of France. The island is now controlled by pro-German Vichy France. A hiker finds a dead woman on the Yorkshire moors; the victim, who has been strangled, is identified as Alice Ruber.
