Dilip Kumar makes his feature film debut with this musical romance directed by Amiya Chakravarty. An old man has two marriageable daughters named Rama (Shamim) and Renu (Mridula). When the millionaire scion Narendra (Aga Jaan), who is slated to marry Rama, disguises himself to take a peak at his future bride, he mistakes Renu for Rama, and the two fall in love. When the mistake is discovered after the wedding, Renu curses God and is kicked out the house for heresy. She meets a wandering musician named Jagdish (Kumar), before returning home to learn that her sister is pregnant and deathly ill. They were faced with the stark choice of saving the life of the mother or the fetus, until Renu makes up with God, prompting a miracle

For any young married couple, moving into their new house is a very special feeling. The feeling gets more special if the young couple has eloped and married. Something similar happened with Shakuntala (Suchitra Sen) and her husband. The landlord (David) helps the couple move to the rented house. The young couple moves to this house which incidentally is the main protagonist of the film. While Shakuntala makes the house into a beautiful home, her husband gets busy with work. She meets the neighboring tea vendor (Mohan Choti) and meets the next door auntie whose favourite pastime is to gossip about developments in others' homes. The couple experiences the sound of violin in the night and ask the tea-stall-owner about it in the morning, who tells that it is being played by a mad man-Pagla Babu.Since, the couple had eloped Shakuntala wanted that her parents-in-law accept her as their daughter-in-law. This is what happens and her in laws somehow search the young couple and they are more than happy to meet Shakuntala. Finally, Shakuntala and her husband go with them and vacate the house. In between Shakuntala grows some seeds in the garden.

Bhavani Prasad (Jayant) is a powerful Shakta priest at Kashi. Prasad, a devotee of the black goddess Kali and a thuggee, religiously follows a practice to murder wealthy travelers who stay in his pilgrim guesthouse and offers them as a sacrifice to Kali. Saroj (B. Saroja Devi) lives a poor lifestyle in Nagpur along with her widowed mom, Leela Sharma (Lalita Pawar) and a younger sister, Nanhi. She gets employed as a singer/dancer in Bombay and relocates there. Once there, she meets with Ajit Rai (Ajit), and the couple fall in love. Circumstances compel her to re-locate to Nagpur and seek employment with another dance/drama company run by Chunilal. Ajit decides to follow her to Nagpur, and visits her mom and sister. It is from here he locates the dance/drama company and does meet Saroj - only to find out that she has changed her name to Mary D'Souza. Ajit will eventually discover that Saroj had witnessed the murder of Chunilal and the killer(s) are now out to silence her - and whoever else dares to come in their way.
