Shiraz est un film germano-britannico-indien réalisé par Franz Osten, sorti en 1928. Il s'agit du second volet d'un triptyque d'Himanshu Rai qui débute par Prem Sanyas (1925) et se termine par Prapancha Pash (1929). Les trois films évoquent des thèmes indiens et en particulier les religions de ce pays. Le premier rappelle le bouddhisme en racontant les origines de Gautama Buddha. Le dernier fait référence à l'hindouisme en proposant une variation autour du thème de la partie de dés qui oppose les Pandava aux Kaurava dans le Mahābhārata. Shiraz quant à lui plonge ses racines dans l'Inde musulmane de l'empire moghol.

Réalisé dans un style orientaliste, Shiraz raconte les événements qui ont mené à la construction du Taj Mahal. Comme Shahjahan (1924) ou Mumtaz Mahal (1926) avant lui, et Shahjehan (1946) ou Taj Mahal (1963) après lui, Shiraz s'éloigne de la réalité historique au profit d'un conte imaginaire.

Synopsis

Au XVII siècle en Inde, une caravane acheminant la très jeune princesse Arjumand est attaquée par une horde de bandits. Ceux qui ne sont pas capturés sont tués. La petite fille échappe par miracle à la razzia mais se retrouve seule à errer dans le désert. Un potier qui passe par là en rentrant à son village la recueille. Ignorant qu'elle est de sang royal, il l'adopte et la nomme Selima. Elle devient la camarade de jeu de son fils Shiraz. Les deux enfants qui ont à peu près le même âge grandissent ensemble et peu à peu, leur amitié juvénile se meut en amour.

In Burma during the Pacific War in 1945, a group of wounded Allied soldiers are at makeshift British military hospital in the jungle. Cyrano de Bergerac (Gérard Depardieu) is a Parisian poet and swashbuckler with a large nose of which he is self-conscious, but pretends to be proud of. He is madly in love with his "friendly cousin" (they were not actually related as cousins), the beautiful Roxane (Anne Brochet); however, he does not believe she will requite his love because he considers himself physically unattractive, because of his over large nose. Soon, he finds that Roxane has become infatuated with Christian de Neuvillette (Vincent Pérez), a dashing new recruit to the Cadets de Gascogne, the military unit in which Cyrano is serving. Christian however, despite his good looks, is tongue-tied when speaking with women. Seeing an opportunity to vicariously declare his love for Roxane, he decides to aid Christian, who does not know how to court a woman and gain her love.

Seven young English aviators are billeted at the Berthelot farm near the French front. One of the flyers, Philip Blythe, falls in love with farmer Berthelot's daughter, Jeannie, and on the morning before a dangerous mission declares his love for her. Philip is shot down, and Jeannie helps an ambulance crew to extricate his apparently lifeless body from the wrecked plane. In the following weeks, Jeannie searches in vain in all of the military army hospitals for Philip. She does encounter Philip's father, who, disapproving of her lowly origins, falsely informs her that Philip has died. In farewell, Jeannie sends a bouquet of lilacs to his room, and Philip, recognizing the flowers as her gift, painfully drags himself to his window in time to call her back to him.
