The film is set in 1282, showing the events leading up to the War of the Sicilian Vespers. It is based on the libretto of the Verdi opera I vespri siciliani, which was itself based on an earlier play written by Eugène Scribe and Charles Duveyrier.
Synopsis
Dans les années 1280, se déroulent les histoires parallèles d'Elena, promise comme épouse à Giovanni da Procida, puis obligée d'épouser le duc de Saint-Rémy, gouverneur de Palerme et de Laura, fille d'un meunier amoureuse d'un pêcheur et déshonorée par un soldat français du gouverneur au cours de la seconde fête de Pâques. Ces faits provoquent l'indignation des Siciliens qui avec Giovanni da Procida se rebellent contre Charles d'Anjou, rébellion connue sous le nom de Vêpres siciliennes...Actors

Annesa (played by Columba Dominguez), is a from a declining aristocratic family and very much devoted to her family, the Decherchi, which is at the edge of financial collapse. The fate of the family depends on the success of their efforts to inherit the estate of a distant uncle who, is hosted by the Decherchis, because of his ill health and is now on the verge of dying. Annesa, exacerbated by the refusal of the uncle to help financially Annesa's financially strapped nephew Don Paulu Decherchi (played by Roldano Lupi), that she is secretly in love with, murders the uncle. Septembre 1942, au large de Cape Town, en Afrique du Sud. Le "RMS Laconia", qui vient de quitter le port, fait route vers l’Angleterre avec 2 000 passagers à son bord ainsi que 1 800 prisonniers italiens. Les fumées du navire sont bientôt repérées par un U-Boot. Sa taille laissant supposer qu’il peut transporter des troupes, la décision est prise de le torpiller. Cela fait, le sous-marin ne quitte pas immédiatement les lieux. Découvrant le sort des prisonniers italiens, mais aussi de civils, le capitaine, se référant à un code d’honneur maritime, ordonne l’organisation du sauvetage, arbore une croix rouge dans l’attente d’un bâtiment français envoyé par Vichy. Mille personnes seront sauvées. Peu après, ce sous-marin sera coulé par les forces alliées tandis que l’amiral allemand Dönitz signera le "Laconia order" interdisant à l’armée allemande de procéder au moindre sauvetage.

As the news of the October Revolution sweep through the world, the German High Seas Fleet's command, wary of a mutiny, decides to send all its ships to a suicide mission in the English Channel. Sailors Albin Köbis and Max Reichpietsch are sentenced to death for political activity. When the socialist sailor Steigert, a member of the firing detail, cannot bring himself to shoot them, he is arrested. On the cruiser Prince Heinrich, Steigert's friends Lenz, Lobke, Kasten and Bartuschek receive Vladimir Lenin's transmit to all of mankind calling for peace. Slowly, the sailors in Kiel — all members of different socialist parties: the Social Democrats, the Independent Socialists and the Spartakists — begin to realize the need for a revolution. The workers and the shipmates rebel against the officers, but the political gaps between them lead the uprising to a failure. In the end, many of the rebel sailors attend the foundation conference of the new Communist Party of Germany.
