Synopsis
Après la mort d'un collègue et ami lors de l'évasion d'un truand dit Le Fondu, l'inspecteur Vardier a juré de le venger. Pour cela, il va manipuler le neveu du Fondu dit Le Niçois, un petit proxénète. Parallèlement Vardier va entamer une liaison avec Lucie, la femme de Gilbert Barrot, un inspecteur débutant. Le Niçois va balancer Le Fondu, mais ce dernier sentant le piège venir élimine froidement son neveu. Quand Lucie veut rompre avec Vardier, celui-ci va développer une jalousie maladive envers Gilbert. La police étant au courant du casse projeté par Le Fondu ils organisent une souricière, celle-ci tourne mal et Le Fondu se met à tirer, Vardier envoi alors Gilbert Barrot à sa poursuite croyant l'envoyer à la mort, Le Fondu tire mais c'est un autre collègue qui succombe. Finalement la maîtresse du Niçois vient balancer Le Fondu pour se venger du meurtre de son amant. Son repaire étant localisé, les policiers se rendent sur place, mais Le Fondu, sans nouvelle de Cricri, sa maîtresse se rend à Pigalle dans le cabaret où elle exerce. Ne supportant pas que sa maîtresse prenne ses distances, il va pour l’étrangler mais la jeune femme l’assomme. Le Fondu sera arrêté mais aura le temps de jeter une grenade dans le commissariat. Vardier se suicidera en faisant exploser la grenade sous son corps, tandis que Le Fondu sera abattu en tentant de s'échapper du commissariat.Actors

Rodion Raskolnikov (Pierre Blanchar) est un jeune étudiant de vingt-trois ans qui a dû interrompre ses études par manque d'argent. Rodion se rend très bientôt compte qu’il y a loin de la théorie à la pratique et il a du mal à vivre avec l’idée de son crime, d’autant plus que le juge Porphyre (Harry Baur) paraît savoir intuitivement qu’il est l’auteur du crime et que Sonia Semionovna, une jeune fille forcée de se prostituer pour soutenir les besoins de son père alcoolique et dont il est tombé amoureux, agit comme sa conscience vivante. Petit à petit, Rodion se rend compte qu’il n’a pas d’autre choix que d’avouer son crime.

Born into a wealthy family of French vintners, Max (Michel Piccoli) is a loner who devoted himself entirely to his obsession: the arrest of criminals. A former judge he is a police inspector and he sees a new band of burglars escape. This failure is still fresh in his mind when he meets Abel who has become a scrap thief and plunders construction sites with a small band of hoodlums around Nanterre. Max plans to encourage them to commit something big and catch them on the spot. Posing as a client, he meets Lily (Romy Schneider), a young German-born prostitute who is the companion of Abel. He pretends to be the director of a small bank branch which receives significant amounts of money at regular intervals. He ensures the support of his police commissioner. Max fails however to reveal his role as instigator. Gradually, some feeling arises between Max and Lily. But Max keeps a reserved attitude and merely influences the scrap through her. Finally, guessing the band ready for action, he communicates an ideal date to commit robbery. On the scheduled day, the police await them and they are arrested. Later in the police station, Rosinsky (the top cop in the bank's district) reveals to Max that he wants all collaborators brought to justice, including Lily. Distraught, Max tries to save her and ends up threatening Rosinsky. In an argument, Max pulls out his gun and kills him.

After an armored car leaves the bank with ten-million dollars, it is attacked on route by Diabolik (John Phillip Law) who manages to steal the money and escape with his partner Eva Kant (Marisa Mell). Leaving the money in their underground hideout, Diabolik and Eva attend a press conference held by the Minister of the Interior which they disrupt by releasing laughing gas. Due to the high level of crime, the death penalty is brought back. The police cannot find Diabolik but gang leader Valmont (Adolfo Celi) suffers at their hands because of a clampdown due to Diabolik's actions. Realising things can get only worse because of Diabolik's crime spree, Valmont contacts Inspector Ginco (Michel Piccoli) and makes a bargain to catch Diabolik alive for the police. In his hideout, Diabolik decides to steal the famous Aksand emerald necklace for Eva's birthday from the Saint Just Castle. Valmont builds up an identikit picture of Eva and circulates it as a means of capturing Diabolik. Diabolik scales the walls of Saint Just Castle where he finds the police are waiting, Diabolik manages to steal the necklace by fooling the police officers with mirrors on the road and dummy decoys of himself.
