Add to a movie listLes Misérables is a 1934 film adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel of the same name. It was written and directed by Raymond Bernard and stars Harry Baur as Jean Valjean and Charles Vanel as Javert. The film lasts four and a half hours and is considered by critics to be the greatest adaptation of the novel, due to its in-depth development of the themes and characters in comparison with most shorter adaptations.
It was released as three films that premiered over a period of three weeks.

Synopsis
Jean Valjean is an ex-convict struggling to redeem himself, but his attempts are continually ruined by the intrusion of Javert into his life. Javert is a cruel, ruthless police inspector who has dedicated his life to pursuing Valjean, whose only crime was stealing a loaf of bread, for which he gets 5 years in jail. And then he serves an additional 14 years for a handful of escape attempts.Actors

Rodion Raskolnikov (Pierre Blanchar) est un jeune étudiant de vingt-trois ans qui a dû interrompre ses études par manque d'argent. Rodion se rend très bientôt compte qu’il y a loin de la théorie à la pratique et il a du mal à vivre avec l’idée de son crime, d’autant plus que le juge Porphyre (Harry Baur) paraît savoir intuitivement qu’il est l’auteur du crime et que Sonia Semionovna, une jeune fille forcée de se prostituer pour soutenir les besoins de son père alcoolique et dont il est tombé amoureux, agit comme sa conscience vivante. Petit à petit, Rodion se rend compte qu’il n’a pas d’autre choix que d’avouer son crime.

Après la mort d'un collègue et ami lors de l'évasion d'un truand dit Le Fondu, l'inspecteur Vardier a juré de le venger. Pour cela, il va manipuler le neveu du Fondu dit Le Niçois, un petit proxénète. Parallèlement Vardier va entamer une liaison avec Lucie, la femme de Gilbert Barrot, un inspecteur débutant. Le Niçois va balancer Le Fondu, mais ce dernier sentant le piège venir élimine froidement son neveu. Quand Lucie veut rompre avec Vardier, celui-ci va développer une jalousie maladive envers Gilbert. La police étant au courant du casse projeté par Le Fondu ils organisent une souricière, celle-ci tourne mal et Le Fondu se met à tirer, Vardier envoi alors Gilbert Barrot à sa poursuite croyant l'envoyer à la mort, Le Fondu tire mais c'est un autre collègue qui succombe. Finalement la maîtresse du Niçois vient balancer Le Fondu pour se venger du meurtre de son amant. Son repaire étant localisé, les policiers se rendent sur place, mais Le Fondu, sans nouvelle de Cricri, sa maîtresse se rend à Pigalle dans le cabaret où elle exerce. Ne supportant pas que sa maîtresse prenne ses distances, il va pour l’étrangler mais la jeune femme l’assomme. Le Fondu sera arrêté mais aura le temps de jeter une grenade dans le commissariat. Vardier se suicidera en faisant exploser la grenade sous son corps, tandis que Le Fondu sera abattu en tentant de s'échapper du commissariat.

In 1776, a young Polish patriot, Boleslas Vorowski, is wounded in an abortive uprising against the Russian forces in Vilnius. A reward for his capture is offered but he is sheltered by Baron von Kempelen, an inventor of lifelike automata, who plans to smuggle Vorowski, a skilful chess-player, to Germany concealed inside a chess-playing automaton called The Turk. Major Nicolaïeff, a Russian rival of Vorowski, challenges The Turk to a game and is defeated, but he realises that the machine is being secretly operated by Vorowski. He arranges for The Turk to be sent to Moscow to entertain the Empress Catherine II. When The Turk refuses to allow Catherine to cheat, the Empress orders that the automaton is to be executed by firing squad at dawn. During a masked ball, von Kempelen replaces Vorowski inside The Turk, to enable him to escape with his lover Sophie. Nicolaïeff, who has been sent to search von Kempelen's house, is slain by the inventor's sabre-wielding automata.

On February 6, 1846, at Paradise Square in Lower Manhattan's Five Points, a territorial battle of hand-to-hand combat between Bill "the Butcher" Cutting's U.S.-born nativist gang, the Natives, and "Priest" Vallon's Irish Catholic immigrant gang, the Dead Rabbits, concludes when Cutting kills Vallon, witnessed by Vallon's young son, Amsterdam. Cutting declares the Dead Rabbits outlawed but orders that Vallon's body be buried with honor. Amsterdam seizes the knife used to kill his father, races off, and buries it along with a medal his father gave him. He is later raised at Hellgate orphanage.
