Dans un petit port de Floride, la vie des habitants est tranquille, jusqu'au jour où des barracudas attaquent les plongeurs. Max Cash is a down-on-his luck fisherman and charter boat captain living in the Bahamas when his life takes a turn when he meets Sarah Livingstone, a tourist who is seeking to find the treasure of accursed shipwreck, 'The El Diablo' which has been rumored to have sunk on an offshore reef near one of the many islands. C'est l'été le plus chaud depuis 150 ans. A Francfort, les ordures ménagères ne sont plus ramassés à la suite d'une grève des éboueurs que la bourgmestre laisse pourrir. Parallèlement les hôpitaux sont débordés par une épidémie de grippe. La jeune docteur Katrin Elder n'a pas le temps de s'occuper de sa fille, celle-ci voulant secourir son chien tombé dans un égout se retrouve coincée derrière une grille, elle est sauvée par Frank Dabrock, un pilote d’hélicoptère de la protection spéciale contre les incendies. Pour la sauver il a du couper l'alimentation électrique d'une partie de la ville dont celle alimentant le Bourse de Francfort. Par représailles la bourgmestre le rétrograde au service des égouts dans la lutte contre les rats. Il se trouve donc on centre des opérations quand la situation se dégrade, les rats se sont multipliés pendant la grève et lorsque des équipes viennent ramasser les ordures, les rats montent à la surface, deviennent agressif et propagent un virus mortel. Une course poursuite va alors s'engager d'une part Febock qui va tenter d'exterminer les rats et d'autre part Katrin Elder qui va tenter de récupérer le docteur Waldemar dont l'organisme a fabriqué des anticorps afin de tenter de produire un vaccin.

After witnessing gangster Eddie Kim brutally beat U.S. Prosecutor Daniel Hayes to death in Hawaii, Sean Jones is escorted by FBI agents Neville Flynn and John Sanders on a Boeing 747-400 to testify in a trial in Los Angeles. Despite increased security for the flight, Kim arranges for a time-release crate full of venomous snakes to be placed in the cargo hold in an attempt to bring down the plane before it reaches Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). To ensure the snakes attack the passengers without being provoked, he has one of his henchmen disguised as an airport ground employee spray the passengers' leis with a special pheromone which makes the snakes highly aggressive. The crate opens midway through the flight and the snakes make their way through the cabin. A couple having sex in the bathroom, and a man using the bathroom are the first killed. The plane's captain, Sam McKeon, investigates and fixes an electrical short, but is killed by the viper that caused it. Co-pilot Rick, unaware of the snake, believes Sam has suffered a heart attack and continues toward LAX.
