The film was a remake of Tamil blockbuster film Kannedhirey Thondrinal (1998) directed by Ravichandran and starring Prashanth and Simran in the lead roles. The film was also made in Malayalam as Dhosth (2001).
The film released on 24 December 1999 to generally positive reviews from critics who lauded the lead actors performance and the musical score by Hamsalekha.

In 1991, four childhood friends reunite in their hometown of Shelby, Indiana. Samantha Albertson (Demi Moore), a science-fiction writer, narrates the story. The film commences on a sunny summer day in Yorkshire when Tamsin (Emily Blunt) meets Mona (Natalie Press). The former travels on horseback and chances upon Mona, who is resting in the grass. The two girls come from completely opposing background; Tamsin is from an upper-middle-class family and has recently been suspended from boarding school for being a bad influence; drinking alcohol. Mona, on the other hand, comes from a dysfunctional family, and her brother, Phil (Paddy Considine), who has recently been released from prison, is the only remaining member of her family still alive. Both of the girls seem to regard their lives as mundane. The new acquaintances head home together, one on horseback and the other on an engineless scooter.

At the beginning of the film, Kabir (Abhay Deol) proposes to Natasha (Kalki Koechlin). After leaving the United States Army and moving to New York City, Brian Flanagan (Tom Cruise) gets a part-time job as a bartender at night while studying for a business degree.
