Add to a movie listSomething in the Wind is a 1947 American musical comedy film directed by Irving Pichel and starring Deanna Durbin, Donald O'Connor, and John Dall. Based on a story by Fritz Rotter and Charles O'Neal, the film is about the grandson of a recently deceased millionaire who mistakes a beautiful female disc jockey for her aunt, who once dated his grandfather. This was O'Connor's first film after he returned from military service in World War II. The film includes the famous "I Love a Mystery" number performed by O'Connor.

A successful American woman, Editor at The Smart World - Editorial, General Offices, Carol Cabbott (Joan Bennett) has just married a German, Eric Hoffman (Charles Lederer), a streamline marriage. They have a seven year old son, Ricky (Johnny Russell). They are to have a vacation to Germany to visit Erics father he didn't see for ten years, although everybody tells them to go to Germany is foolish. When their latest rocket test fails and government funding collapses, rocket scientist Dr. Charles Cargraves (Warner Anderson) and space enthusiast General Thayer (Tom Powers) enlist the aid of aircraft magnate Jim Barnes (John Archer). S. industrialists, Cargraves, Warner, and Barnes build an advanced single-stage-to-orbit atomic powered spaceship, named Luna, at their desert manufacturing and launch facility; the project is soon threatened by a ginned-up public uproar over "radiation safety". A housewife (Day) is confronted during her daily chores by her married lover (Tone). The man, after a long affair, tells the woman that he has to break off their relationship. The woman threatens suicide, but when she picks up a shish kabob skewer, the two struggle and the man is stabbed in the chest and collapses. The housewife hides the body in the house. Before she can leave, her brother-in-law (Clark) arrives and tells the woman that he knows about the affair and that he has invited her husband, her lover and his wife to her house that evening so that he can tell them about the affair. The woman, in a panic worrying that they will find out about the killing, attempts to flee but cannot get away from her vengeful brother-in-law.

The story begins as Hollywood press agent Bill Dunnigan (Fred MacMurray), who works for a fictional movie studio, arrives by train with the body of Polish-born actress Olga Treskovna (Alida Valli), in her hometown, a city referred to affectionately by its population as "Coaltown" because of its coal mining industry. In a voiceover narrated by Dunnigan, we learn that he was in love with Olga, although we never find out if she truly reciprocated his love. He has brought her back to "Coaltown" to honor her deathbed request - to be buried there. After encountering some hostility from the local funeral director who resents Olga's father because he was crooked, Dunnigan enlists the services of Father Paul (Frank Sinatra), the local priest, who pulls some strings to grant Olga's request.

The movie tells the story of Elizabeth (Colbert) and John (Welles), a married couple recently separated when John goes off to fight in World War I. When Elizabeth receives notice of John's death, she marries another man (George Brent).
