The screenplay is based on Wide Boys Never Work, a novel by Robert Westerby.

Synopsis

Jim Bankley (Patterson) a Canadian veteran living in London, is trying to succeed as a prizefighter, without much luck. He falls in love with Bella Francesi (Domergue), sister of local Sicilian mob leader Rico Francesi (Benson), and she soon draws him into the gang's activities. When he finds himself being drawn into a murder plot, he finally realizes that his lover is only using him, and determines to escape the gang - but things don't turn out the way he planned.

A newlywed couple decide to buy an old yacht "The Cyclops", and fix it up as their home. Soon after the purchase they begin to hear rumours about the ship's dark past. At first they do not believe the rumours; that is, until they start to experience some unexplained ghostly events for themselves. They then hire paranormal investigator, Dr. Fawcett (Hugh Burden) and his medium, Mrs. Manley (Mignon O'Doherty) to determine if there are ghosts on the ship. The paranormal investigator uncovers the murders of the former yacht owner's wife and her lover. He also discovers that the bodies were hidden somewhere on board the yacht. The medium spiritually intervenes and rids the yacht of the haunting spirit.

Cold and vicious Tony (Nesbitt) and his more pleasant natured but easily influenced partner-in-crime Frank (Faulkner) hatch a plan to rob bookmaker Joe Carter (Harry Locke) of his takings as he leaves the local dog track. While making her way home from the cinema one night in a particularly grey and drab town, a young woman is murdered in an unusually brutal and sadistic manner. Local suspicion immediately falls on Hughie (Knapp), a strangely behaved and not very bright local youth who has a habit of wandering aimlessly around the town at all hours randomly collecting stray bits and pieces, with a particular fondness for broken glass – which unfortunately for Hughie happens to have been one of the weapons used in the fatal attack.

Johnny (Slater) is a long-distance lorry driver returning to London from a provincial delivery, after having taken in a show by Joan Rhodes on the way. Late at night he stops to give a lift to an attractive female hitchhiker whose car has broken down and who is in a hurry to get to back to London. Later, Johnny pulls in to a transport café to make a telephone call and buy a coffee. When he returns to his truck, the woman is gone. Assuming that in her hurry she has picked up a lift with another driver, he goes on his way, and a few miles down the road is flagged down by another driver to help with a woman who has been found laid at the roadside. It turns out that the woman is Johnny's hitchhiker, and that she is dead.
