L'amour cherche un toit (titre original : Standing Room Only) est un film américain réalisé par Sidney Lanfield, sorti en 1944.

Synopsis

New York. Fabrique de jouets Todd and Co. Employée de cette société, Jane Rogers, est secrètement amoureuse de Lee Stevens, le fondé de pouvoir de l’entreprise. Mais celui-ci est fiancé à la fille du patron, Alice Todd. L’ingénieuse Jane se fait alors passer pour une secrétaire et réussit à accompagner Lee à Washington où il doit négocier un important marché. Une fois sur place, en pleine crise du logement, le vrai fondé de pouvoir et la fausse secrétaire doivent se contenter pour dormir d’une salle d’attente, puis d’un jardin public. Pour trouver un toit, le couple se fait engager comme domestiques dans une maison bourgeoise.

A pirate captain known as the Hook (Victor McLaglen) buries his treasure on an island and kills the map maker so no one else will find it. The Hook's ship, The Avenger attacks the Mary Ann and after a big fight, the crew are killed or made to walk the plank by the pirates. Sylvester escapes by disguising himself as a gypsy woman and is taken on board The Avenger with Margaret.

The Lemon Drop Kid (Bob Hope), a New York City swindler, is illegally touting horses at a Florida racetrack. The Kid touts across a beautiful woman intending to bet $2,000 on a horse named Iron Bar. Rigging a con, the Kid convinces her to switch her bet, but learns that she was betting for boyfriend and notorious gangster Moose Moran (Fred Clark). When the horse finishes dead last, a furious Moran demands the Kid pay him $10,000 (the amount he would have won) by Christmas Eve, or the Kid "won't make it to New Year's."
