The Wrong Guy tells the story of dorky executive Nelson Hibbert (Foley), who gets passed over for a promotion. Upon hearing this, he ends up shouting "I'll kill you!" as security drags him from the board room. Later, when he goes to confront his boss (Kenneth Welsh), he finds that the man has already been murdered, and, due to the scene he made earlier, assumes that he will be mistaken for the murderer. Nelson flees, unaware that security cameras have already revealed the identity of the true killer to the authorities. Nelson tries to escape to Mexico, but along the way he meets both the real killer (Feore) and the murder's investigator, Detective Arlen (Higgins), who Nelson believes is trailing him. Chaotic events transpire and Nelson meets a narcoleptic farm girl, Lynn Holden (Tilly). What follows is a bizarre series of misadventures marked with slapstick routines and constant one-liners.

In 200 Motels, the film attempts to portray the craziness of life on the road as a rock musician, and as such consists of a series of unconnected nonsense vignettes interspersed with concert footage of the Mothers of Invention. Ostensibly, while on tour The Mothers of Invention go crazy in the small fictional town of Centerville ("a real nice place to raise your kids up"), wander around, and get beaten up in "Redneck Eats", a cowboy bar. In a long cartoon interlude bassist "Jeff", tired of playing what he refers to as "Zappa's comedy music", is persuaded by his bad conscience to quit the group, as did his real-life counterpart Jeff Simmons, who was fired for insubordination before the film began shooting. Simmons was replaced by Martin Lickert (who was Ringo's chauffeur) for the film. Almost every scene is drenched with video special effects (double and triple exposures, solarisation, false color, speed changes, etc.) which were innovative in 1971. The film has been dubbed a "surrealistic documentary".

Since the age of nine, Sebastian Telfair has been a well known player on the basketball courts in his hometown of Brooklyn. Au loin, dans la profondeur de champ, un couple jeune et bien mis s’avance. Nous les distinguons des autres passants parce qu’ils ne semblent pas vaquer à leur travail, selon toute apparence, ils sont heureux de vivre et de marcher ensemble. Maintenant, ils passent au-dessus de la bouche d’aération du métro que nous remarquons enfin à quelques mètres de la caméra. Sous le puissant souffle souterrain, la robe de la jeune femme se soulève alors et découvre les mollets et les genoux avant d’être rabattue prestement. » La jeune femme éclate de rire et le couple effectue une sortie de champ.
