Strawberries in the Supermarket (Serbian: Јагода у супермаркету, Jagoda u supermarketu) is a 2003 Yugoslav comedy-action film directed by Dušan Milić. The film won the first prime at the 2004 Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California. Branka Katić cast in the title role.

Jagoda in the Supermarket was screened at the Berlin Film Festival Perry Seibert, Rovi.

Synopsis

Jagoda (Branka Katic) is a 30-year-old cashier who, after seeing someone else steal the man she wanted to date, makes the mistake of refusing to sell an elderly woman some strawberries. The next day the woman's grandson, Marko (Srdjan Todorovic), walks into the store firing weapons and taking hostages. Eventually the relationship between Jagoda and Marko deepens and grows more complex.

At the beginning of his summer holiday, a somewhat naive trainee teacher Daniel (Moritz Bleibtreu) buys a ring from a stall run by a neighbor, the aspiring artist and street vendor Juli (in German, "Juli" would be not only the month July but also a common nickname for someone named "Julia"; Christiane Paul). The ring bears a Mayan sun symbol, which, according to Juli, has the power to lead him to the woman of his dreams, whom he will recognise by a similar sun symbol. As Juli has the ring's counterpart, and as she is in love with him, she invites Daniel to a party that evening, hoping that they will meet.

The story takes place in June 1991 in Yugoslavia, only a few days before the outbreak of the Yugoslav War. Ratko (Srđan Todorović), a Bosnian Serb, leaves Belgrade prison and steals a red-coloured Mercedes-Benz truck. The fact that he's (almost pathologically) passionate about stealing trucks and driving them while at the same time being colour-blind brought him to prison in the first place. Suzana (Aleksandra Balmazović), an urban Belgrade girl, discovers she is pregnant and wants to do an abortion. As her father, who believes that the emerging chaos won't last, uses their money for a speculative investment, she decides to go to Dubrovnik to earn the money for abortion. After nearly running her over while she was hitch-hiking, Ratko decides to give her a lift.

Kenan (Mario Drmać), a Bosniak classical musician, and Milan (Tarik Filipović), a Serb, live in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina in a clandestine gay relationship.
