Inspiré par le roman du même titre par Carlo Bonini et Giancarlo De Cataldo, il dévoile, sur fond de blanchiment d'argent, de trafic de drogue et de prostitution, la corruption au sein de la vie politique italienne ainsi que la lutte pour le pouvoir au sein de la mafia alors que le Vatican est affaibli.
Le titre fait allusion au quartier pauvre et populeux de Subure (Suburra en latin) dans la Rome antique.
Le 6 octobre 2017, Netflix diffuse les dix épisodes de sa première série italienne, Suburra, prequel au film, relatant la rencontre entre les différents protagonistes et leurs évolutions personnelles.
Synopsis
Les faits se déroulent en novembre 2011. Le film aborde la bataille politique et criminelle pour la conquête d'Ostie, destinée à devenir un paradis des jeux de hasard. Les personnages sont le député Filippo Malgradi (Pierfrancesco Favino), Numéro 8 (Alessandro Borghi), chef d'une famille criminelle qui gère le territoire, Sebastiano (Elio Germano), un jeune organisateur d'événements, différents religieux corrompus et des chefs mafieux rivaux comme « Samourai » (Claudio Amendola), représentant de la faction la plus crainte du crime organisé à Rome. Tous ces personnages révèlent un système de corruption, d'illégalité endémique et ramifiée.Actors

Une attaque suicide tue 15 personnes dans un supermarché de Kansas City. L'enquête conclut que les kamikazes ont été aidés par des passeurs de clandestins à la frontière américano-mexicaine, une région aux mains des trafiquants de drogues. En mission à Djibouti et en Somalie, Matt Graver est à nouveau envoyé dans cette région, pour une mission orchestrée dans l'ombre par la CIA. Matt fait une nouvelle fois appel à Alejandro Gillick, le sicaire avec lequel il a lutté contre le cartel de Juárez. Sous les ordres non officiels du Secrétaire à la Défense, Matt doit créer une guerre entre les cartels pour que ces derniers s'autodétruisent. Après avoir assassiné un avocat du gang des Matamoros à Mexico, Gillick et Matt kidnappent Isabela, la fille du chef de cartel Carlos Reyes, lors d'une opération sous fausse bannière. Toutefois, les choses ne se passent pas comme prévu et Gillick se retrouve rapidement seul à devoir lutter pour sa survie et celle d'Isabela, abandonnés par le gouvernement américain et traqués par les cartels mexicains.

Under the watchful eyes of Father Silvano Bentivoglio (Carmen Argenziano) and Dr. Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer), the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) initiates the Large Hadron Collider and creates three vials of antimatter particles larger than any that have ever been produced before. Almost immediately, Father Silvano is killed and one of the vials of antimatter goes missing. At the same time, the Roman Catholic Church is mourning the sudden death of Pope Pius XVI in Rome and prepares for the papal conclave to elect the next Pope. The Camerlengo Patrick McKenna (Ewan McGregor) assumes temporary control of the Vatican. The Illuminati kidnap four of the 'preferiti' (the favourite cardinals to be elected pope) before the conclave enters seclusion and threaten to kill one candidate every hour and destroy all of Vatican City at midnight, using the missing vial of antimatter as a bomb. The Vatican summons symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) from Harvard University and Vittoria from CERN to help them save the four preferiti and locate the vial.
