On her piano, eight year old Rhoda Penmark (Patty McCormack) plays the French song "Au clair de la lune", while her father (William Hopper) says his goodbyes to her and his wife, Christine (Nancy Kelly), as he goes away on military duty. Their neighbor and landlord, Monica Breedlove (Evelyn Varden), comes in with a present for Rhoda - a locket. Rhoda, looking pristine and proper in her perfect pinafore dress and long blonde pigtails, thanks Monica for the gift. She then tap dances on the hard floor. Monica notices Rhoda's tap shoes, and Rhoda says that adding the taps to the shoes was her own idea. They then discuss a penmanship medal competition that Rhoda lost to her schoolmate, Claude Daigle; Monica speaks of it as a childish disappointment, but Rhoda's face darkens with fury. Christine and Rhoda leave for the school picnic at a nearby lake.

In West Dallas, Texas, 22-year-old drug dealer Chris Smith (Hirsch), desperate to pay his debt to loan sharks, decides to murder his mother, Adele, to collect the $50,000 of insurance money. He has been told by his mother's boyfriend Rex that the sole beneficiary will be Chris' younger sister Dottie (Temple). Assuming Dottie would share any money she gets with them, Chris manages to rope his dim-witted father Ansel (Haden Church) into a conspiracy to kill Adele – who is Ansel's ex-wife – to get the money. Chris also enlists the help of Joe Cooper (McConaughey), a police detective who has a side career as a contract killer. Ansel plans to split the money four ways between themselves, Dottie, and Ansel's new wife Sharla (Gershon). Dottie hears the plan as they are talking, and agrees that it's a good idea.

In a Montreal apartment, a woman named Lisa (Samantha Jones) waits for an old man to sew bags of heroin into the cloth body of an old-fashioned doll. Lisa takes the doll with her on an airline flight to New York City, but when, on disembarking, she sees a man watching her, she becomes worried and gives the doll for safekeeping to a man she'd spoken with on the plane, professional photographer Sam Hendrix (Efrem Zimbalist Jr.). The man who'd been watching Lisa then roughly escorts her away. Later, when Lisa calls Sam about the doll, Sam and his wife, Susy (Audrey Hepburn), who is blind from an auto accident, are unable to find it.
