This is the second film adaptation, after The Dance of Life (1929) and before When My Baby Smiles at Me (1948), of the popular Broadway play Burlesque, written by George Manker Watters and Arthur Hopkins.
Synopsis
Working her way on board a liner traveling through the Panama Canal Zone, as a hairdresser, Maggie King meets a brash young soldier, "Skid" Johnson on his last day in the army and reluctantly agrees to a date to celebrate. She discovers Skid's amazing prowess with a trumpet while celebrating at a nightclub. The two become involved in a nightclub brawl, which causes Maggie to miss her ship back to the States. Now stranded, she's forced to move in with Skid and his pal Harry. She and Skid eventually fall in love and marry. Greedy for money, she encourages the reluctant Skid to travel to New York City to play in a major night club, leaving her behind. He is a big success; fame and fortune go to his head, which eventually destroys his marriage, and his career.Actors

The film opens shortly before World War I. Raoul De Baere (Raft) is a dancer from New York City, aiming to become king of the European nightclub circuit. He tries to get Annette (famed exotic dancer Sally Rand) to be his dancing partner, but she refuses. Jack Ellery (Oakie) is staging a lavish musical revue, starring Eric Lander (Brisson), Ann Ware (Carlisle), and Rita Ross (Michael), supported by a cast of a hundred background singers/dancers (almost all women, and many scantily clad) and two full orchestras. On opening night, just before the show, somebody tries to kill Ware several times. Ellery calls in police lieutenant Murdock (McLaglen) of the homicide squad to investigate. During the show a private detective and then Rita are murdered. Ellery hides this from the rest of the performers, claiming the victims are just sick, and talks Murdock into investigating while the revue continues on, otherwise Ellery will go broke.

After years of questioning why people fear him, Death takes on human form (March) for three days so that he can mingle among mortals and find an answer. He finds a host in Duke Lambert (Standing) after revealing himself and his intentions to the Duke, and takes up temporary residence in the Duke's villa.
