Tabloid is a 2010 American documentary by Errol Morris. It tells the story of Joyce McKinney who in the 70s was accused of kidnapping and raping Kirk Anderson, an American Mormon missionary. The incident, known as the Mormon sex in chains case, became a major tabloid story in Britain and triggered a circulation battle between two popular newspapers, the Daily Mirror and the Daily Express.

The film is based on interviews of McKinney conducted by Morris, who also interviewed journalist Peter Tory (1939-2012) and Kent Gavin, a photographer, involved with her story. The film makes reference to Mormon culture, such as temple garments.

Synopsis

Ce documentaire traite de l'affaire Joyce McKinney, une ancienne Miss Wyoming, qui fut accusée, en Angleterre en 1977, d'avoir enlevé et violé Kirk Anderson, un missionnaire mormon américain. Cette affaire devint un sujet majeur pour les tabloïds britanniques et déclencha une bataille entre le Daily Mirror et le Daily Express.

Using film made at American prisons, Leuchter talked about his upbringing where his father was a corrections officer. Through his family associations, young Leuchter claimed he was able to witness an execution performed in an electric chair. Leuchter's impression of the event was that the electric chairs used by American prisons were unsafe and often ineffective. The event led him to design modifications to the device that were adopted by many American states.

The major portion of the film is spent addressing excerpts from the millions of memos, nicknamed 'Yellow Perils' by his first Pentagon staff and 'Snowflakes' by the second, that Rumsfeld wrote during his time as a congressman and advisor to four different presidents, twice as United States Secretary of Defense. It also focuses on a response Rumsfeld gave to a question at a U.S. Department of Defense news briefing on February 12, 2002 about the lack of evidence linking the government of Iraq with the supply of weapons of mass destruction to terrorist groups. The content of the memos are varied, covering everything from the aftermath of Watergate, to the Abu Ghraib torture and prisoner abuse scandal, to the definition of the word “terrorism”. Morris returns to the motif of snowflakes swirling within a snow globe throughout the documentary as he discusses the context of the memos with Rumsfeld, notes to which the Defense Secretary gave him limited access while preparing the film, and which Rumsfeld agrees to read aloud on camera.

The film follows the White family over the course of a year in their daily life through first-person interviews. The film mentions the details of the death of patriarch Donald Ray "D. The film emulates the 1968 trip made by Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins to Patagonia, but rather than by land, Jeff Johnson travels by sea from Mexico and south along the west coast of Chile. The film opens with original home movie footage as taken by Chouinard and Tompkins, and then continues with Johnson's own footage, in which he includes surfing, sailing and climbing as the film follows Johnson signing on with a small boat heading for Chile, his being delayed for several weeks on Easter Island, his meeting travel partner Makohe, and in his reaching Patagonia, Johnson meeting with Chouinard and Tompkins. The film concludes with his attempt to climb Cerro Corcovado (the Corcovado volcano), an attempt that was halted 200 feet from the summit out of concerns for safety.
