Fin février 1973, pendant l'insurrection de Wounded Knee, Marvin et Bud, deux activistes indiens, sont mis en détention. Anna, la femme de Marvin, est morte quelques mois plus tôt dans un accident. Marvin est dévasté et Bud soutient son ami dans cette épreuve. Mais en prison, ils doivent faire face à la menace des deux policiers qui les surveillent et collaborer avec la jeune avocate chargée du dossier. Two miners in full gear, including face masks, are seen going down into a deep mine shaft. They reach an alcove and one of the figures takes off half of their gear, and is revealed to be a woman. Frank Chambers (Jack Nicholson), a drifter, stops at a rural California diner for a meal, and ends up working there.
