Synopsis

The accountant Paolo Anselmi is a confirmed bachelor who finds himself having to do the best man for a friend's business partner. Paul left the old apartment to his friend and his wife moved to a small guesthouse where he met a woman, a young hostess. The relationship between the two begins to get serious, but he does not want commitment, then the girl gets moved to another city. Paul regain his freedom, but loneliness grips him. The company of the other bachelors bored, if the night feels bad and is only the mother continues to insist on getting married. The bachelor is convinced and begins to seek a wife. Among the "candidates" have many defects insurmountable, jealousy, family, bulky, but finally manages to convince him is Miss Carla who becomes his companion despite their initial meetings have always ended in fights furious.

Deux célibataires, Pina et Adolfo, après s'être contactés par le biais d'une petite annonce, font leur première rencontre au cours d'un dimanche à la campagne. The film begins in Florence, Italy in 1935, where a group of cultured expatriate English women — called by the Italians "the Scorpioni" — meet for tea every afternoon. The Magnificent Cuckold is about a hat tycoon who is ecstatically, if not hungrily, in love with his youthful wife. It is all blissful, that is, until our man, middle-aged and somewhat of a square among his blasé, upper-class friends to whom cuckoldry is a common practice, is seduced by one of them. At this point doubts and suspicions, like conscience, begin to plague him. If he could succumb to extramarital confections, why not his gorgeous mate? Quickly his love for his spouse degenerates beyond obsessive, into the realm of maniacal. He becomes madly concerned that his wife is cheating on him --even though she is not being unfaithful. When he looks at her it becomes obvious to him that she is a very attractive woman. And, all the men around her must be dying to be with her. Gnawed by jealously, he will imagine variations on nabbing her and her lover red-handed.
