Synopsis

John Rarick, devenu l'un des hommes les plus riches d'Amérique grâce à sa chaîne de magasins populaires, déménage avec sa famille du Kansas à New York. Obsédé par le travail, il ne remarque pas que sa femme Jenny et son fils Avery sont malheureux et regrettent la vie simple du Kansas. Seule sa fille Jennifer aime New York et essaie désespérément de faire partie de l'élite sociale de la ville, même s'ils la snobent à cause de son origine sociale. Lors d'un gala de charité, elle rencontre Berry Rhodes et décide immédiatement de l'épouser, même s'il est déjà fiancé à Muriel Preston. Lorsqu'elle découvre que Berry est un architecte talentueux, elle convainc Rarick de l'engager pour construire une nouvelle tour de bureaux pour son entreprise. Berry rejette d'abord les avances de Jennifer mais finit par se rendre compte qu'il l'aime. Ils prévoient de se rencontrer dans le jardin, mais avant que Berry n'arrive, Jennifer est confrontée à Muriel qui lui dit qu'elle ne peut pas acheter Berry de la même façon qu'elle achète son chemin dans la société. Lorsque Muriel raconte la conversation à Berry, elle déforme les paroles de Jennifer. Peu de temps après, Muriel et Berry se marient.

Marianne, une jeune femme française, tient une auberge dans une petite ville française pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Séparée de son amour d'enfance, André, elle lui promet de l'attendre. Sa ville est partiellement détruite et une compagnie de soldats américains y est cantonnée, attendant les ordres de rentrer au pays. Voyant un cochon sur le point d'être abattu, Marianne le revendique comme un animal de compagnie. Lina (Gina Lollo) was an orphan, brought up by her adopted mother getting trained for music. Her mother became sick due to heart attack on the stage, and Lina will go to the stage in place of her mother. But a group of teaser will tease her, by connecting her mother name too and will not allow to perform. From the balcony a person, the prince of Russia, Sergio (Vittorio Gassman) will come down and make the teaser group go out of the theater and asks Lina to perform. It was a very good performance, but at the end she will come to know that mother had another attack, so been send to the long distance hospital. By the night she wanted to go, but there was no way to. Sergio will offer her lift to the hospital, and on the way he will come to know each other. The prince will not tell his real identity, but will say only that he came there for horse competition in the local club, and he stays regularly Paris and he is from Russia. By reaching the hospital, she will left her hand bag in the coach, Sergio by seeing that will put enough money and his golden ring in that, and give the bag to Lina. In hurry she will enter the hospital, and will find her mother is no more.

Mary Howard (Joan Crawford) is a novelist with advanced ideas about love and marriage, and is in love with her publisher, Rogers Woodruff (Herbert Marshall). She decides the only logical thing to do is to lure him away from his wife and marry him. Mary's friend, Jimmy (Robert Taylor), however, is convinced he's the right man for her and pursues her. He sees through her rationalizations and wrong-thinking and decides to throw Mary and Woodruff's wife Claire (Greer Garson) together at the house of a friend (Spring Byington). The two women do not know each other, but during their chats Mary appreciates and respects Claire's maturity and wisdom.
