Synopsis
Lors que son vieil ami Edward Johnson, élu sénateur, est assassiné par un voleur de chevaux, le cowboy Lefty Brown cherche à assouvir sa vengeance. Pour retrouver et tuer les coupables, il voyage dans les plaines désolées du Montana en compagnie d'un jeune franc-tireur, Jeremiah, et d'un marshall alcoolique, Tom Harrah. Alors qu'ils recherchent les commanditaires du crime, Brown est accusé du meurtre de son vieux compagnon. Harry Collings (Fonda) and Arch Harris (Oates) are two saddle tramps who have grown weary after seven years of wandering through the American Southwest. Along with a younger companion, Dan Griffen (Robert Pratt), they stop off in Del Norte, a ramshackle town in the middle of nowhere, which is run by the corrupt McVey (Severn Darden). Harris and Griffen discuss traveling to California to look for work when Collings abruptly informs them he has decided to return to the wife he left years before. Griffen temporarily leaves the two in a bar and goes to buy supplies. Some town thugs shoot him to death out of pure meanness. Collings and Harris escape, but they return that night. Collings shoots McVey in the feet, crippling him.

Kansas (Hopper) is a stunt coordinator in charge of horses on a western being shot in a small Peruvian village. Following a tragic incident on the set where an actor is killed in a stunt, Kansas decides to quit the movie business and stay in Peru with a local woman. Kansas thinks he has found paradise, but is soon called in to help in a bizarre incident: the Peruvian natives are "filming" their own movie with "cameras" made of sticks, and acting out real western movie violence, as they don't understand movie fakery. The film touches on the ideas of fiction versus reality, especially in regards to cinema. The movie is presented in a way that challenges the viewer's traditional cinematic understanding of storytelling, by presenting the story in a non-chronological fashion, and by including several devices typically only seen behind the scenes of filmmaking (rough edits and "scene missing" cards), and the use of jarring jump cuts.

Set in 1950s Arizona, the story follows a drifter and gambler named Beaudray Demerille (Fonda). In a card game he wins the movie's title character Wanda Nevada (Shields), a 13-year-old orphan with dreams of singing at the Grand Ole Opry. Despite his best efforts, Wanda sticks to Demerille, accompanying him to a pool hall. Texas Curly (Fix), an aging prospector, enters and tells the bar patrons about his gold mine in the Grand Canyon. They laugh him off as a drunk. As Curly leaves the bar, he drops a pouch. Wanda picks it up and follows Curly, then sees Strap Pangburn (Markland) and Ruby Muldoon (Askew), two cons from the bar, harassing the man about the location of the mine. Wanda runs when Strap and Ruby kill Curly, alerting them to her presence. She hides in Demerille's car and tells him about Curly's death. Strap and Ruby see Wanda in the car but get lost in the chase. Stopped for the night, Demerille and Wanda open Curly's pouch and find a map. They head to the Grand Canyon and trade the car for mining supplies. Strap and Ruby follow behind by half a day.

Overland with Kit Carson is constructed upon a seemingly simple premise. Old Western settlers are being driven off their homesteads and ranches by a combination of Indian assaults and harassing attacks by bands of mysterious outlaws. Then, the US government sends out famed Indian scout Kit Carson and army officer David Brent to investigate the facts, and Carson discovers that a mysterious villain known only as Pegleg, who enjoys planning his misdeeds as much as carrying them out, controls an outlaw gang called the Black Raiders and is using them and the Indians to drive out the settlers so he can establish his own empire. By 1939, film-goers knew exactly what to expect from a western serial: a clean-cut, self-assured hero facing down a good-for-nothing villain in a tireless pursuit, the menacing Indians and gun-toting bad guys, the moral soldier and the pretty girl, a reckless boy, lots of action, the climactic final gunfight, and not much in the way of thematic depth.

Following a disastrous flood of the Green River, the ranchers of the valley are forced to abandon their land and migrate to neighboring Rand County.
