Le Bataillon des va-nu-pieds (Το Ξυπόλητο τάγμα (To xypolito tagma)) est un film grec réalisé par Gregg Tallas et sorti en 1954.

Tourné avec des acteurs amateurs, en décors naturels, avec des dialogues tirés de la vie quotidienne, Le Bataillon des va-nu-pieds est considéré comme s'inscrivant dans la vague néoréaliste.

La musique de Míkis Theodorákis est considérée comme une des meilleures musiques de film, accompagnant l'image et lui donnant une signification plus profonde, celle de l'urgence et de la peur. Cette bande-son a été comparée à ce qu'Eisenstein avait pu faire. L'image est due à Michalis Giazidis, chef opérateur depuis les années 1920. Il utilisa encore la caméra qu'il avait commencé à employer en 1924. Il travailla aussi toujours avec les mêmes six projecteurs pour éclairer ses scènes, lui permettant un intense jeu d'ombres et de lumière.

Le Bataillon des va-nu-pieds propose une des rares représentations positives de la présence américaine en Grèce, au point que le réalisateur, qui revenait d'Hollywood, a été accusé d'être pro-américain.

Synopsis

À Thessalonique, pendant l'occupation allemande, une bande de 160 enfants, chassés de leur orphelinat par l'occupant, dévalisent les profiteurs du marché noir et redistribuent la nourriture à la population qui meurt de faim.

It is June 1940, during the Battle of France. After five-year-old Paulette's parents and pet dog die in a German air attack on a column of refugees fleeing Paris, the traumatized child meets 10-year-old Michel Dollé whose peasant family takes her in. She quickly becomes attached to Michel. The two attempt to cope with the death and destruction that surrounds them by secretly building a small cemetery among the ruins of an abandoned watermill, where they bury her dog and start to bury other animals, marking their graves with crosses stolen from a local graveyard, including one belonging to Michel's brother. Michel's father first suspects that Michel's brother's cross was stolen from the graveyard by his neighbour. Eventually, the father finds out that Michel has stolen the cross.

The film begins at Sannomiya Station on 21 September 1945, shortly after the end of World War II. A boy, Seita (清太), is shown dying of starvation. Later that night, having removed Seita's body, a janitor digs through his possessions and finds a candy tin which he throws away into a nearby field. The spirit of Seita's younger sister, Setsuko (節子), springs from the tin and is joined by Seita's spirit as well as a cloud of fireflies. Seita's spirit then begins to narrate their story accompanied by an extended flashback of the final months of World War II.

The story opens when a convicted murderer asks to make his confession on the day of his execution. The condemned man is visited by an old friend, Father Flanagan (Spencer Tracy) who runs a home for indigent men in Omaha, Nebraska. When the prison officials suggest that the condemned man owes the state a debt, Father Flanagan witnesses the condemned man's diatribe to prison officials and a reporter that describes his awful plight as a homeless and friendless boy who was a ward in state institutions. After the convicted man asks the officials to leave, Father Flanagan provides some comfort and wisdom. On the train back to Omaha, Father Flanagan is transformed in his humanitarian mission by revelations (echoed in the words) imparted by the condemned man's litany of hardships experienced as a child without friends or family as a ward of the state.

In the 1800s, young orphan Oliver Twist is forcibly brought to a workhouse in an unidentified town In England on his ninth birthday. After nearly being sold as an apprentice to a cruel chimney sweep, Oliver is sent to Mr. Sowerberry, a coffin-maker, whose wife and senior apprentice take an instant dislike to the newcomer. After more poor treatment, Oliver snaps and attacks Noah, the snotty older apprentice, for having insulted his mother. Knowing his life with the Sowerberrys will only get worse, Oliver escapes on foot early the next morning.
