Synopsis
Mario et Filippo Agasti, tous deux interprétés par Vittorio Gassman, sont deux frères jumeaux. L'un est un député irréprochable décidé à introduire la morale dans la vie politique italienne en sa qualité de président de la Commission d'enquête sur la corruption. L'autre est un magouilleur cynique et arriviste, toujours plus apprécié dans le milieu de son frère grâce à ses trafics tordus, et qui finira par prendre la place de ce dernier, enfermé dans une clinique psychiatrique afin d'éviter qu'il ne révèle les manipulations dont il a eu connaissance.Actors

Le film retrace les tribulations de Marcella Valmarin (Agostina Belli), pendant le Fascisme, son écroulement, puis pendant l'après-guerre. D'abord femme de chambre, puis prostituée, elle devient diva du régime sous le nom d'Alba Doris et maîtresse du Duce puis se marie après la libération avec un riche industriel suisse. Pendant ce temps, son fiancé Roberto (Cochi Ponzoni), qui sera en fin de compte le seul à n'avoir jamais couché avec elle, est blessé pendant la guerre contre l'URSS, abandonné par ses camarades, et recueilli par une paysanne russe avec laquelle il vivra comme un pauvre moujik. L'Audience suit le parcours d’un jeune homme catholique, Amedeo (Enzo Janacci), qui a quitté sa ville natale, dans le nord de l’Italie, pour venir à Rome, avec une idée fixe : obtenir une audience privée du pape Paul VI à qui il a des révélations très importantes à faire. La détermination d’Amedeo est telle qu’elle apparaît suspecte aux autorités du Vatican. Puisqu’il ne veut pas renoncer à son audience, on le fait surveiller par un policier, Aureliano Diaz (Ugo Tognazzi). Puis on le met entre les mains d’une prostituée, Aïché (Claudia Cardinale), censée lui tirer les vers du nez, mais qui s’attache à lui et entreprend de l’aider dans ses démarches. Elle le met en rapport avec un politicien d’extrême droite, le prince Donati (Vittorio Gassman), qui le recommande à Monseigneur Amerin (Michel Piccoli), un prêtre moderne. Mais c’est à un père Jésuite (Alain Cuny), rencontré au cours d’un dîner, qu’Amedeo dira, en secret, son message au Pape : le prêtre paraît bouleversé par son contenu.

During the Second Punic War, the commander Scipio Africanus is in crisis because the Roman army can not defeat the many legions Carthaginian Hannibal Barca. Set in Rome and its surroundings, the film tells in a frighteningly realistic, ruthless and grotesque the evil of two powerful men of Italy in the seventies: a Director of illegal buildings (Vittorio Gassman), extremist fascist, and an upright judge, cynical looking in part to the Italian law (Ugo Tognazzi). Both can not stand each other, given the contrasts between the two men in any social, political and philosophical. Everyone hates each other and would like to delete it, but just because of the bad example that the two men give power to the people, many Italians are adversely affected because of cheating and rudeness of the fascist manufacturer and the communist magistrate. The director Dino Risi underlines the misdeeds and the weakness of the Italian people to react accordingly, by focusing on the story of these two men who are each other's opposite of the net.

The film starts where L'armata Brancaleone has ended. Brancaleone da Norcia (again played by Vittorio Gassman) is a poor but proud Middle Ages knight leading his bizarre and ragtag army of underdogs. However, he loses all his "warriors" in a battle and therefore meets Death's personification (a clear parody of Bergman's Seventh Seal). Having obtained more time to live, he forms a new tattered band. When Brancaleone saves an infant of royal blood, they set on to the Holy Sepulchre to bring him back to his father, Bohemund of Taranto (Adolfo Celi), who is fighting in the Crusades. As in the first film, in his quest he lives a series of grotesque episodes, each a hilarious parody of Middle Ages stereotypes. These include: the saving of a young witch (Stefania Sandrelli) from the stake, the annexion of a leper to the band, and a meeting with Gregory VII, in which Brancaleone has to solve the dispute between the pope and the antipope Clement III. On reaching Palestine, Brancaleone obtains the title of baron from the child's father. He is therefore chosen as a champion in a tournament to solve the dispute between the Christians and the Saracens in the siege of Jerusalem. The award for the winner is the former leper, who is in fact revealed to be a beautiful princess, Berta, who adopted the disguise to travel to the Holy Land in relative safety. After having nearly defeated all the Moor warriors, Brancaleone is however defeated by a spell cast on him by the witch, who, having fallen in love with him, could not stand seeing him married with the princess. He therefore starts to wander in despair through the desert, and again Death comes to claim her credit: Brancaleone, brooding and world weary as he is has no qualms about dying but asks to be allowed to die in "knightly" fashion, in a duel with the Grim Reaper itself. Death agrees and the confrontation begins...after a fierce exchange of blows Brancaleone is about to be cleft by Death's scythe but is ultimately saved by the witch, who gives her life for the man she loved.
