The film formed part of the first commercial presentation of the Lumière Cinématographe on 28 December 1895 at the Salon Indien, Grand Café, 14 Boulevard des Capuchins, Paris.

Synopsis
Two men stand working as blacksmiths. The one on the left of the screen repeatedly hammers an anvil while the man on the right winds a device. The man of the left then removes the metal he was hammering and places it into a bucket of water. At the end of the film a third man walks onto the screen from the left, with a wine glass and bottle in hand, hands the glass to the smith at the anvil, and begins to pour him a drink.Comments

The first portion, "Rust," follows a group of factory workers in three state-run factories: a smelting plant, an electric cable factory and a sheet metal factory. Workers of all three are hindered by sub-standard equipment, hazardous waste, and a lack of safety precautions. Perhaps even worse, the declining need for heavy industry results in a constant shortage of raw materials, leaving the workers idle and concerned for their future.

Belfort, dans l'Est de la France, ses rues aux commerces fermés, son usine Alstom, jadis poumon économique de la région et fleuron de l'industrie française. Voici le théâtre et l'arrière plan de l'histoire racontée par ce film. Corinne et Patrick sont deux habitants de cette ville qui confient au réalisateur ce que leur précarité implique comme douleurs intimes et comme révoltes contenues. Corinne, qui n'a plus d'appartement, s'acharne à croire que l'avenir va lui sourire, qu'elle va pouvoir trouver un travail stable et enfin reprendre goût à la vie. Patrick, quant à lui, s'isole de plus en plus et se concentre sur son métier d'auxiliaire de vie avec ce qu'il lui offre de richesse humaine. Pour oublier que parfois il ne mange pas à sa faim, il ' se rend utile aux autres ' comme il dit. Aline, sa meilleure amie, tente malgré ses propres difficultés de le convaincre de tenter sa chance ailleurs. Au milieu du bruit de la ville et des sons permanents de la radio qui leur prédit des jours difficiles ils parlent de courage mais aussi de colère devant leur absence d'avenir.
