La Vache et le Prisonnier (English version: "The Cow and I") is a French-Italian tragicomedy film from 1959 starring Fernandel and directed by Henri Verneuil. The story was based on Jacques Antoine's novel, Une histoire vraie. It is considered to be a classic and one of Fernandel's most iconic and popular films. It was Fernandel's highest grossing film ever in 1959.
The film was shot in black and white. In 1990 a colorized version was released.
Synopsis
In 1943 Charles Bailly (Fernandel), a French prisoner of war, decides to escape from the farm in Germany where he works and return to France. He travels through the country, accompanied by his cow, Marguerite. On the way they encounter many people, some sympathetic and some not. The key scene involves Fernandel's character encountering a troop of soldiers on a narrow bridge. The cow won;t turn round to allow them to pass easily and they are forced into single file. Fernandel and the cow pas as if inspecting the troops.Actors

The film's plot is based on the Kennedy assassination and subsequent investigation. Aleksey Teodorovic Vlassov (Yul Brynner) is a high ranking KGB official who defects while in France. He has with him highly-classified information as part of a deal with Western intelligence for his arrival in the United States. The debriefing is held at Langley by DCI Allan Davies (Henry Fonda) and MI6 representative Philip Boyle (Dirk Bogarde). Vlassov hands off a list of enemy agents in Western Europe including a deep penetration into NATO. Davies wants to begin operations to arrest the agents; however, those on the list suddenly begin to die off. The CIA also has suspicions over the authenticity of Vlassov's claims. The CIA discovers that a defection photo of Vlassov was taken in the Soviet Union, not in Turkey, judging from the contours of Mt. Ararat in the background. Vlassov also fails a lie detector test after he angrily protests about sexual related questions asked by the CIA during the test.

Justin, fils du boulanger de Valorgue, courtise Françoise, la fille de l'épicière. Justin part pour son service militaire en Afrique du Nord. Françoise, par dépit, quitte aussi le village et revient, dix mois plus tard, avec un bébé sur les bras.
