In 1943 Charles Bailly (Fernandel), a French prisoner of war, decides to escape from the farm in Germany where he works and return to France. He travels through the country, accompanied by his cow, Marguerite. On the way they encounter many people, some sympathetic and some not. The key scene involves Fernandel's character encountering a troop of soldiers on a narrow bridge. The cow won;t turn round to allow them to pass easily and they are forced into single file. Fernandel and the cow pas as if inspecting the troops.

Heini Völker is a teenage boy. His comrades give him the nickname "Quex" (Quicksilver). He lives in poverty in Berlin, in a one-room apartment. The year is 1932 - the depth of the Depression. His father is an out-of-work supporter of the Communist Party who sends his son on a weekend of camping with the Communist Youth Group. While there Quex finds the undisciplined revelry of the Communists to be distasteful. There is smoking, drinking, and dancing late into the night. Meals are served by cutting hunks from loaves of bread and throwing them to hungry campers who push to get something to eat. Boys and girls play games where they take turns holding each other down and slapping each other on their private parts. Quex runs away and in another part of the park finds a group of Hitler Youth camping by a lake. He spies on them from a distance.

Non loin de la frontière russo-chinoise, à Harbin. Depuis quelques jours, la ville de Mandchourie s'agite. Un commissaire soviétique se déplace dans la ville avec son groupe armé de mitrailleuses entre les gens en fuite avec leurs biens dans la chaleur étouffante. Les soldats britanniques déployés dans le quartier diplomatique de Harbin affichent un mépris sous couvert de neutralité.
