Synopsis
Dans l'île de Noirmoutier, un écrivain et son épouse s'installent dans un fort, où ils vivent en réduisant au minimum les contacts avec la population. La femme a perdu l'usage de la parole après un accident. Le mari est écrivain. À proximité vit un ingénieur retraité, misanthrope. Des faits troublants se produisent. Plusieurs habitants de l'île semblent perdre le contrôle d'eux-mêmes. Les réalités s'entremêlent : l'écrivain trouve un sujet pour un roman fantastique, tandis que l'ingénieur manipule les îliens à distance grâce à une machine de son invention. Les deux hommes se rencontrent pour une partie d'échecs capitale : le démiurge réel du monde imaginaire joue contre le démiurge probablement imaginaire du monde réel. L'enjeu et la fin de toute chose, c'est à la fois l'amour et la mort.Actors

C’est un documentaire en hommage à Jacques Demy et à son oeuvre Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, film qui fut tourné pendant l'été 1966. La ville de Rochefort organisa une grande fête en 1992 pour célébrer les 25 ans de la sortie du film en 1967. Profitant de l’occasion Agnès Varda a tourné ce documentaire en mêlant des plans du tournage de l’époque en 1966 par Varda elle-même, des extraits, des interviews d’acteurs et figurants Rochefortais qui ont participé au tournage du film.

"Après avoir fait un film de fiction sur l'enfance de Jacques (JACQUOT DE NANTES), mon intention a été de faire un documentaire – relativement objectif – sur Jacques Demy, adulte et cinéaste. J'ai recueilli des témoignages et suscité des réactions. J'ai moi-même apporté des souvenirs et des documents sur lui mais j'ai souvent passé le relais à ses amis, à ses proches, aux acteurs et actrices qui ont travaillé avec lui, à des " fans " et à trois demoiselles qui ne l'ont pas connu mais qui circulent naturellement dans son univers." A young man (Philippe Noiret) arrives at a train station to see his wife. After four years of marriage the couple are having problems of a somewhat existential nature--the wife loves her husband, but is thinking of leaving him (he had an affair some time back, but her problem is not jealousy so much as questioning the very nature of love itself). The couple discuss their lives, and become resigned to the fact that they belong together, even if their love has changed. They return to Paris, the wife now better understanding her husband's nature because she's seen his hometown. As this drama unfolds, we see the lives of the poor but proud people living there; fishermen wanting to harvest shellfish from a small lagoon they have been forbidden to use because of an alleged problem with bacteria, a small child dies of an unknown illness, a young man wins the right to court the 16-year-old daughter of a neighbor, after proving himself in a local aquatic jousting tournament.

The film begins with the contorted body of the woman, covered in frost. From this image, an unseen and unheard interviewer (the voice of Varda herself) puts the camera on the last men to see her and the ones who found her. The action then flashes back to the woman, Mona (Sandrine Bonnaire) walking along the roadside, hiding from the police and trying to get a ride. Along her journey she meets and takes up with other vagabonds such as herself as well as a Tunisian vineyard worker, a family of goat farmers, a professor researching trees, and a maid who envies what she perceives to be a beautiful and passionate lifestyle. Mona explains to one of her temporary companions that at one time she had an office job in Paris and did very well for herself, but she became unsettled with the way she was living – choosing instead to wander the country free from any responsibility, picking up what she could to survive as she goes. Throughout the film, Mona's condition seems to become progressively worse until she finally falls where we first saw her, frozen and entrenched in her misery in a ditch.
