Cyrus Norman was a millionaire who lived in the Louisiana bayous with his mistress Miss Lu (Gale Sondergaard). Norman died ten years previous, and now an American Indian man (George Regas) paddles the executor of Norman's estate, Mr. Crosby (George Zucco), through alligator-infested waters to Norman's isolated mansion, where his will is to be read at midnight. At the mansion, Crosby meets Miss Lu, who lives there with a large black cat. When he removes the will from a safe, he discovers that someone has tampered with it.

Steve Bennett (Bob Hope) is a stockbroker in Miami who has just accepted a position working for a man named T.R. Ralston (Edward Arnold). The story is told in flashback from Death Row as Ronnie Jackson (Hope) relates to a group of reporters the events that lead to his predicament. Newspaper reporter Pete (Bing Crosby) works in a Paris orphanage. His charming way with children and music enables him to find homes for even the most troubled kids. Famous Hollywood actor Don Bolton (Hope) is a vain movie star whose biggest fear is to be drafted into the US Army. He definitely lacks the qualities of a good soldier, and he is so afraid of loud noise that he would not last a day in the service, let alone cope with hearing a single gunshot when he is on set shooting a war film at the studio. À New York, les Lorrimore sont une famille dont la richesse a disparu et qui est maintenant couverte de dettes. Elle décide alors de demander l'aide d'un riche cousin de la famille, Martin Deering. Bientôt des rumeurs apparaissent à propos de leur relation. Phyllis et Martin deviennent amants pendant que Brighton est en voyage d'affaires au Mexique. À son retour, le couple se querelle, et elle avoue sa relation avec Martin et le quitte. Elle commence à travailler comme vendeuse dans un magasin chic, mais refuse d'épouser Martin. Un soir, Brighton la rencontre dans le magasin et lui demande de revenir avec lui. Ils décident alors de recommencer à vivre ensemble.
