Synopsis
Un terrifiant alien, le Mangler, parcourt les rues de Los Angeles, la nuit, tuant et mutilant des victimes humaines choisies au hasard. Un journaliste, par ailleurs père de l'une des victimes, associé à un détective, mène l'enquête mais ne trouve pas grand-chose si ce n'est les révélations d'une mystérieuse médium qui prétend savoir qui est le tueur et comment l'arrêter…Actors

Steven and Diane Freeling (Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams) live a quiet life in an Orange County, California planned community called Cuesta Verde, where Steven is a successful real estate developer and Diane is a housewife who cares for their children Dana (Dominique Dunne), Robbie (Oliver Robins), and Carol Anne (Heather O'Rourke). A small family relocates to the Sonoran Desert, to be closer to the grandparents of the family. The Mangler, in Gartley's Blue Ribbon Laundry service, is a laundry press owned by Bill Gartley (Englund). The trouble starts when Gartley's niece, Sherry, cuts herself on a lever connected to the machine and splashes blood on the Mangler's tread while trying to avoid being crushed by an old ice box some movers are clumsily carrying past. Sparks and light streams occur when both the blood and the ice box come into close contact with the Mangler. Later, an elderly worker, struggling to open a bottle of antacids, spills them on the moving tread of the Mangler. When she attempts to collect them, the safety shield inexplicably lifts up and traps her hand inside, followed by her entire body getting pulled into the machine.

On the night of a meteor shower, young David Gardner sees an alien spacecraft land in a sand quarry behind his house. This is the beginning of an alien invasion that sees David's parents (George and Ellen Gardner), his teachers and the townspeople slowly assimilated by the alien life forms, returning with less emotions. The only one who believes David is the school nurse, Linda Magnuson. Together, David and Linda enlist the aid of the U.S. Marines to help save the world. The film ends when David realizes that everything that has happened was a dream. He tells his parents what happened, and wonders if his dream will become a nightmare, especially when the alien spacecraft begins to land, and David witnesses something that terrifies him so much that he begins screaming, but remains unseen to the audience.

An international criminal enlists Ruth Hopkins' maid and chauffeur in a scheme to kidnap her asthmatic ten-year-old son Philip for ransom. As the plot begins to unfold, Philip has just brought home a snake from a local importer, unaware that his new pet has been accidentally switched with a deadly black mamba destined for a toxicology lab. The lab reports the mix-up, and a police officer is dispatched to the Hopkins residence, only to be shot by the panicking chauffeur. The London townhouse is surrounded by police, trapping the criminals, the child, and his grandfather inside with the mamba, which is now loose in the ventilation system.
