Add to a movie listThe Devil Strikes at Night (German: Nachts, wenn der Teufel kam) is a 1957 West German film directed by Robert Siodmak. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and is based on the true story of Bruno Lüdke.
It is the story of a serial killer who murders women during the last year or two of World War II. In one of the crimes a man is arrested who is obviously innocent. An investigator who starts to get a thread which leads to the real killer is frustrated by Nazi authorities who feel that revealing the truth will undermine the people's faith in their supposedly infallible system. The detective story gradually becomes a story about the evils of political propaganda and corruption.
Synopsis

The story takes place in East Berlin soon after the Berlin Wall is built, and is based on an actual escape on January 28, 1962. Kurt Schröder is a chauffeur to East German Major Eckhardt and his seductive wife Heidi, and lives within sight of the Wall. Kurt is having an affair with Heidi. One night he sees a friend, Günther Jurgens, who works at the garage where Kurt has the Major's car maintained, drive his truck into the wall, and get killed trying to escape to the west. Günther's sister, Erika, comes looking for Günther when he doesn't return, and is told that Kurt saw him last night. She then goes to Kurt's house, where he lives with his mother, Uncle Albrecht (a musician), sister Ingeborg and kid brother Helmut. Erika is intent on escaping to West Berlin, thinking that her brother made it. Kurt, reasonably satisfied with his life, has no intention of risking his life to attempt an escape. Erika then looks out beyond the barbed wire, but Kurt catches her as she tries to crawl under, and they pretend to be lovers to hide her intentions from suspicious guards. Kurt then hides her in his house. A piece of Erika's clothing is caught in the barbed wire, and the guards track her to the Schröder's house. She hides in a room without a floor, and narrowly escapes the guards after they conclude that she could not be in the room.

With no better offers to be had, famous American Civil War upstart officer George Armstrong Custer takes over the Western Cavalry maintaining the peace in the Dakotas. Mexique, 1864. L'empereur français Napoléon III impose l'archiduc Maximilien d'Autriche contre la volonté du peuple. The movie starts in Germany 1939, in the barracks of an artillery battalion. The enlisted men of the battery are harassed by their Wachmeister Schulz and a platoon leader, Feldwebel Platzek, whenever possible. Especially Gunner Vierbein, who has a passion for music and wanted to become a piano player, is a preferred target. This intensifies when Vierbein is ordered by Schulz to carpet beating in his rooms and Schulz´s wife, Lore, starts flirting with him. Even the squad leader Unteroffizier Lindenberg, who is known to be fair and correct, starts under pressure from Schulz to pick on him. He breaks down under the constant hard drill and harassment; when he steals ammunition on a rifle range, to commit suicide, one of his comrades, Gefreiter Asch, who helps him constantly to get along with the military life, prevents this and decides that the harassment by the NCOs can´t go on.

Jeune peintre mentalement instable, Francesco di Villaverde a la manie d'étrangler ses partenaires féminines une fois qu’il leur a fait l’amour. Alors qu'il supprime une femme mariée sur une plage, son meurtre est observé par un voyeur. Ce-dernier rapporte l’information à des gangsters qui imaginent un plan machiavélique pour faire endosser à Francesco un meurtre qu’ils doivent commettre. Pendant ce temps, suite à la mort de son épouse tuée par Francesco, un milliardaire américain confie l'enquête à un détective privé, Bob Martin, et lui demande également de retrouver un collier appartenant à la défunte. Martin fait rapidement le lien entre le jeune peintre et les nombreux crimes, mais comme il ne dispose pas assez de preuves contre le criminel, il va utiliser sa propre femme pour l'attirer et le piéger.
