The opening sequence takes the form of a computer simulation run by Satan to analyze souls and determine individual weaknesses to exploit and corrupt. The program finally settles on Elliot Richards (Brendan Fraser), a geeky, over-zealous man working a dead-end technical support job in a San Francisco computer company. He has no friends and his co-workers are always avoiding him. He has a crush on his colleague, Alison Gardner (Frances O'Connor), but lacks the courage to ask her out. After Elliot is again ditched by his co-workers at a bar while trying to talk to Alison, he says to himself that he would give anything for Alison to be with him. Satan, in the form of a beautiful woman (Elizabeth Hurley), overhears him and offers to give Elliot seven wishes in return for his soul.

Charlie Sykes and Rachel Clark are a young all-American couple that decide to run away and elope in Las Vegas. On the road to Vegas, they ignore the warning of a local gas station attendant named Sam. They take an abandoned backroad where Rachel is kidnapped by a zombie Hell Cop who takes her to hell. Charlie goes back to Sam, and Sam explains what the Hellcop is and how to save her. Sam then gives Charlie a shotgun with special ammo and a car that holds a special attribute. On the highway, Charlie meets other dead people that live in Hell and even a motorcycle gang. On the road, he meets a mechanic named Beezle, with his young apprentice. Beezle gives him tips on how to save his girlfriend and even brings him back to life. After Charlie rescues Rachel, Beezle reveals himself to be Satan and proposes a deal to let them, and his apprentice, go free if they can defeat the Hell Cop in a race to the portal that connects Earth and the backroads of Hell.

Martine and Michel are very much in love and have decided to get married, but one evening, their love is put to the test. Two messengers, a demon and an angel, come to their house. Un prêtre marche en priant dans un couvent puis sort de scène. Un diable apparaît dans le baptistère. Il tire les cloches, et se change en prêtre lorsque passent plusieurs religieuses. Il doit alors leur faire la messe. Il se rechange alors en diable. Effrayées, elles s’enfuient, alors que lui fait disparaître le baptistère et les chaises. Il fait ensuite apparaître des gargouilles et des diablotins. Une immense figure diabolique apparaît, se change en grosse grenouille, et le diable la chevauche sous les applaudissements de ses affidés, qui se sont saisis de leur fourche et dansent. Finalement, les religieuses avec leurs croix font tout disparaître. Le diable se bat alors avec un gentilhomme, puis avec le prêtre. Une cérémonie religieuse arrive, avec un ange armé, qui terrasse le diable.

The film opens in the utopian future that results from the music of Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves).
