In 1908, the young Estonian politician Aleksander Kesküla (Üllar Saaremäe) has escaped from Estonia, then part of the czarist Russian empire, to Switzerland. Kesküla is strongly concerned about the national oppression in the Russian empire. It is also the point of view of the famous Russian exile and bolshevik, Vladimir Lenin. (This role was played by Viktor Sukhorukov). Lenin believes czarist Russia to be "the prison of nations". Kesküla takes his last exams at the University of Bern. Since birth Ponirah has lived a cursed life. Her mother died while birthing her and her brother Permadi is hit by a truck while riding a bicycle with her. L'action se passe sur la côte des Pyrénées orientales près de la frontière espagnole. Mario Balducci s'est évadé de prison, après avoir réglé son compte à son ancien complice qui l'avait donné, il rejoint son ex maîtresse, Mado, une chanteuse de beuglant à qui il lui demande de l'aider à passer en Espagne, en lui fournissant un faux passeport puis une embarcation. En attendant d'avoir tout le nécessaire, le couple se rend dans le village natal de Mado, un village de pêcheurs. Pour se faire Mario vole une voiture et l'abandonne en la jetant d'une falaise. Le faux passeport tarde à arriver, Mario s’impatiente et demande à Mado d'user de ses charmes pour « pigeonner » un artisan pêcheur. Elle jette son dévolu sur Carlos, la chose est d'autant plus facile pour elle que le jeune homme bien qu'ayant une liaison avec Clémentine a toujours été secrètement amoureux de Mado. La voiture engloutie est retrouvée par une plongeuse et bientôt la police vient enquêter sur les lieux. Mario reconnu par un des policiers le blesse grièvement, puis parent en otage Carlos, il s'embarque avec Mado sur le bateau de ce dernier. Le maire du village ayant intercepté le passeport, on sait alors que le criminel se dirige vers l'Espagne, une flottille de bateaux de pêche s'en va à la poursuite de Mario qui tente d’atteindre les eaux territoriales espingoles sans se douter que le maire a contacter son homologue catalan qui a réuni lui aussi une flottille afin de barrer la route au fuyard. Coincé, Mario se lance dans une fusillade et rejoint la terre, il trouvera la mort, tandis que Mado sera blessée., 17minutes

Sivadhasan (Antonythasan Jesuthasan), is a Tamil Tiger soldier during the last days of the bloody Sri Lankan Civil war. After the armed conflict resolves, his side loses and he is forced to move to a refugee camp. There he decides to move to France to take a fresh chance at life. However, in order to secure political asylum, he requires a convincing cover story. He is given the passport of a dead man, Dheepan, and pairs with people he barely knows posing as his family. Along with his supposed wife, Yalini (Kalieaswari Srinivasan) and his supposed 9-year-old daughter, Illayaal (Claudine Vinasithamby) they get on a ship bound for Paris. Upon arrival, he lands a job as a resident caretaker and starts building a new life in a housing project in Le Pré-Saint-Gervais, a northeastern suburb of Paris, which turns out to be another conflict zone for him.
