Ilmar Raag (born 21 May 1968 in Kuressaare) is an Estonian media executive, screenwriter and film director, best known for his socio-critical film The Class (Estonian: Klass). He has served as CEO of Estonian National Television (Estonian: Eesti Televisioon) from 2002 to 2005. He is well known columnist in many prestigious Estonian newspapers (Postimees, Eesti Päevaleht). In recent years he has written many scripts and directed critically acclaimed films, notably August 1991 and The Class.
Raag was born in Kuressaare on 21 May 1968. He received his high school education from Aleksander Mui secondary school No 2 of Kingissepa. He graduated from University of Tartu in 1997 and received his M.A. degree in screenwriting from Ohio University, the School of Telecommunications (1999). He made internships in Hollywood development departments (New Regency, Phoenix Pictures). His further career took him to the TV management. After being the Head of Acquisitions for Estonian National Television, he was promoted to the Chairman of the Board of the same TV company. In 2002, he staged a play in one of the Estonian theaters (Ugala). At the same time, he started to consult and doctor Estonian feature scripts. In 2004, he wrote two TV feature scripts. He directed one of them - August 1991 as made for TV movie for Estonian Television and the other One More Croissant got the third prize at Hartley Merill International Screenwriting Competition and the support from MEDIA New Talent program.
Eager to continue his filmmaking career, he quit as CEO of Estonian National Television and made his first feature film The Class in 2007. Since then he shot a feature in France "Une Estonienne à Paris" with Jeanne Moreau and Laine Mägi in leading roles, back in Estonia "Kertu" that is set to be released in 2013 and in Russia "I am not coming back".
Currently he is developing new projects with producer Riina Sildos from Amrion (Estonia).

Le film est présenté au 42e Festival international du film de Karlovy Vary où il remporte deux prix (East of West Award et Label Europa Cinemas) et au Festival international du film de Varsovie où on lui décerne le prix FIPRESCI. En 2010, il adapte le même sujet dans une série télévisée Klass: Elu pärast. La série remporte le premier prix du Festival Tous Écrans.
En 2014 sort Ia nie vernus (titre anglophone : I Won't Come Back), un drame qui remporte plusieurs prix internationaux (Pays-Bas, Russie, Biélorussie, États-Unis, etc.).

Biography
Sorti de l'université de Tartu, Ilmar Raag poursuit sa formation à l'université de l'Ohio suivi d'un stage au département de scénarios de Columbia Pictures. Il est correspondant des journaux Rahva Hääl et Eesti Päevaleht à Paris. En 2001-2005, il travaille pour Eesti Televisioon, ainsi que pour la station Kuku Raadio.Il est membre de la Société des étudiants estoniens.

In 1908, the young Estonian politician Aleksander Kesküla (Üllar Saaremäe) has escaped from Estonia, then part of the czarist Russian empire, to Switzerland. Kesküla is strongly concerned about the national oppression in the Russian empire. It is also the point of view of the famous Russian exile and bolshevik, Vladimir Lenin. (This role was played by Viktor Sukhorukov). Lenin believes czarist Russia to be "the prison of nations". Kesküla takes his last exams at the University of Bern. When World War I bursts into flame, Lenin views the Russian and German bourgeoisies to both have caused the war and so he begins to agitate "to end war even if Russia will be defeated."

Le film raconte l'histoire contemporaine d'Ania, une orpheline passée par une institution de Saint-Pétersbourg, sortie élève émérite et récemment devenue maître de conférence en littérature. Elle a un aspect très juvénile et il est difficile de lui donner un âge précis. Elle a pour amant un homme marié bien plus âgé qui pourrait passer pour son père. The Estonian teenager Joosep (Pärt Uusberg) is being bullied by his entire high school class, the ring leader of them all is Anders (Lauri Pedaja), his accomplice Paul (Mikk Mägi) and three other friends Toomas (Joonas Paas), Tiit (Virgo Ernits) and Olav (Karl Sakrits). Anders encourages the class to continually beat up Joosep, and harass him in other ways as well, such as fully undressing him and then pushing him in the girls' changing room. His classmate Kaspar tries to protect him and breaks from the group, which results in the violence being directed to him as well. Also, in a homophobic atmosphere Joseph and Kaspar are ridiculed for supposedly having gay feelings for each other. Nevertheless, when the school administration and Joosep's parents try to find out who is to blame for the treatment Joosep has been receiving, the class unanimously but falsely accuses Kaspar of mistreating him.
