The Fly God est un film américain réalisé par Clifford Smith, sorti en 1918.

Synopsis

Bob Allers et sa femme sont en route vers l'Arizona lorsqu'ils sont victimes d'un bandit qui vole leur cheval et leur argent. Ils sont secourus par William "Red" Saunders, qui procure à Allers un travail dans le saloon local. Peu après, alors que le même bandit tente de cambrioler le saloon, Allers le tue en légitime défense, mais sans savoir qu'il est en réalité le frère du shérif. Accusé de meurtre par ce dernier, Allers est défendu par Red. Le jury hésite et rend sa décision en se basant sur le vol d'une mouche dans la salle de délibération. Allers est finalement acquitté et retrouve sa femme et leur bébé.

Wayne plays John Carruthers, an undercover US Marshal, but we don't know that until well into the film. He appears to be in town investigating a string of robberies committed by the Polka Dot Bandit (Yakima Canutt), but when he's a little late in discovering one of the Bandit's latest thefts, Sheriff Jake (George "Gabby" Hayes) thinks he's the thief. For some reason, instead of arresting him, Jake accompanies him on his journey; after all, as Wayne says, "It's kind of lonesome trailing alone." The two stumble upon a gang robbing a pack-mule train; they rescue the beautiful Betty Mason (Eleanor Hunt), whose father has just been killed by the bandits. She and her father were bringing desperately needed provisions to town, but the bandits have successfully cut off any supplies, forcing the townspeople to consider fleeing their homes or starving to death.

Billy the Kid (Bob Steele) and his friends Jeff (Carleton Young) and Fuzzy (Al St. John) are on the run. They make it to Paradise Town, where the trio witnesses the murder of Marshal Mason (Stanley Price). Fuzzy poses as the marshal and rides into the town, which is now ruled by a gang led by Burke (Curley Dresden) under orders from a prominent businessman in Paradise. Setting out to put an end to the gang's lawless rule over the town, the trio face another problem --the ward of the town banker Hardy (Edward Peil, Sr.), Ann (Phyllis Adair), who is out to set obstacles for them for unknown reasons. Along the journey they befriend Mexican secret agent Lopez (Julian Rivero), who is posing as a bartender. As the plot thickens, it is revealed that the true mastermind is Hardy, who plans on buying up all the local property to dig a smuggling tunnel to Mexico.
