Harry O. Hoyt (6 August 1885 - 29 July 1961) was an American screenwriter and film director whose career began in the silent era. He graduated with a degree in literature from Yale University in 1910. His 1925 film The Lost World, based on the book by Arthur Conan Doyle, is notable as a pioneering effort in the use of stop-motion animation. He was a brother of actor Arthur Hoyt who appeared in The Lost World.

Biography

Durant la période du cinéma muet, de 1915 à 1928, Harry O. Hoyt réalise vingt-deux films américains, le plus connu étant Le Monde perdu, sorti en 1925, avec Wallace Beery et Bessie Love.

Après le passage au parlant, il est le réalisateur (conjointement avec Albert H. Kelley) du film d'aventure Jungle Bride , sorti en 1933, avec Anita Page et Charles Starrett. Ultérieurement, il réalise encore cinq courts métrages en Technicolor, produits par la Warner et sortis entre 1947 et 1951.

Par ailleurs, comme scénariste ou adaptateur ou auteur de l'histoire originale, Harry O. Hoyt contribue à quatre-vingt-un films américains (certains réalisés par lui), de 1913 à 1948.

Il est le frère de l'acteur Arthur Hoyt (1874-1953), lequel apparaît dans deux de ses films muets, le western Sundown (1924 — coréalisé par Lawrence Trimble —, avec Bessie Love et Hobart Bosworth), puis Le Monde perdu pré-cité.

From a lost expedition to a plateau in Venezuela, Paula White brings the journal of her father explorer Maple White to the eccentric Professor Challenger in London. The journal features sketches of dinosaurs which is enough proof for Challenger to publicly announce that dinosaurs still walk the earth. Met with ridicule at an academic meeting at the Zoological Hall, Challenger reluctantly accepts a newspaper's offer to finance a mission to rescue Maple White. Professor Challenger, Paula White, sportsman Sir John Roxton, news reporter Edward Malone (who is a friend of Roxton and wishes to go on the expedition to impress his fiancée), a sceptical professor Summerlee, an Indian servant Zambo, and Challenger's butler Austin leave for the plateau.

The publisher of The Tribune newspaper, Henry Kruger, who is used to ordering his staff around, finds that he is ignored by everyone in his own home. He is shocked when he discovers a scandalous picture of his own daughter, Phyllis, on the front page of the competing paper The Daily Argus. Henry pays a visit to the dubious publisher of the competing paper, Andy McDonald, and warns him to ever publish a picture like that again, or Henry will kill him. Henry is unaware of the fact that a man named "Slippery" Joe Clary has overheard his conversation with Andy, which Joe later reveals to him, threatening to expose him. Henry counters by claiming that Andy was the one who got Joe sentenced with his testimony, and that Andy dated Joe's girlfriend while he was in the slammer.

In the Asian province of Seemang where the Bay of Bengal meets the jungle, Chandler Elliott (John St. Polis) owns a large and prosperous rubber plantation.
