Add to a movie listThe Hunt (Portuguese: A Caça) is a 1963 short Portuguese film directed by Manoel de Oliveira. The film is a grim, surrealistic short narrative film that contrasted with the positive tones of Oliveira's previous film. Due to censorship issues, Oliveira was forced to add a "happy ending" to the initial release of the film and was unable to restore his original ending until 1988. Because of this film and anti- Salazar regime comments Oliveira made after a screening of his previous film O Acto de Primavera, he was arrested by the PIDE in 1963. He spent 10 days in jail and was interrogated until finally being released with the help of his friend Manuel Meneres.

Cette adaptation du roman La Princesse de Clèves parle de l'amour contrarié de Catherine de Chartres qui, après une déception amoureuse, décide d'épouser un médecin très réputé Jacques de Clèves sans éprouver pour lui aucun amour. It is set in July 2001. Rosa Maria (Leonor Silveira), a university teacher, takes her little daughter Maria Joana on a cruise from their home country of Portugal to Bombay, India, to see Rosa's husband who is an airplane pilot. Her motive is to visit the birthplaces of civilisation. At each port, a new person boards the ship. A famous businesswoman (Catherine Deneuve) boards in France, a famous model (Stefania Sandrelli) in Italy, and a famous actress (Irene Papas) in Athens. The captain of the ship (John Malkovich) invites the three distinguished women to dinner at his table, and they all speak in their own languages for the better part of the conversation. Later in the movie, Maria Joana and Rosa Maria are also invited to his table, where the captain presents the child with a gift.

Au XVI siècle, au Portugal, le jeune roi Dom Sebastião est en proie aux doutes : contre l'avis de ses proches, de la noblesse et d'un mystérieux cordonnier, il rêve de partir en Afrique pour se battre et suivre les glorieuses traces de ses ancêtres. Le film développe le mythe du roi de Dom Sebastião, l'histoire de la vie du roi mort durant la bataille d'Alcacer Quibir. Le Portugal tombant à sa mort sous le coup de la domination espagnole, les Portugais sont par la suite restés dans l'attente du retour de ce roi dont on n'a jamais récupéré le corps. On parle d'un retour pour sauver l'humanité du mal durant une matinée brumeuse sur un fier destrier blanc.
