The Kiss in the Tunnel is a 1899 film British short silent comedy film, produced and directed by George Albert Smith, showing a couple sharing a brief kiss as their train passes through a tunnel, which is said to mark the beginnings of narrative editing.
The director, according to Michael Brooke of BFI Screenonline, "felt that some extra spice was called for," in the then-popular 'phantom ride' genre, which featured shots taken from the front of a moving train, "and devised a shot showing a brief, almost furtive moment of passion between two passengers, taking advantage of the brief onset of darkness." Just this middle shot was offered by The Warwick Trading Company to exhibitors, who were advised, "to splice it into train footage," such as Cecil Hepworth's View from an Engine Front - Train Leaving Tunnel (1899), "that they almost certainly would own from previous programmes,"
This insertion of a single shot into another film indicates, according to film historian Frank Gray, "a new understanding of continuity film editing," which, "would have a profound impact on the development of editing strategies and become a dominant practice."
Regarding the film itself, Screenonline reviewer Michael Brooke points out that "the lighting here is totally unrealistic - we can see everything that's going on," and, "no attempt has been made at realism in the setting - the "carriage is very obviously a painted flat that has been decorated with various props: luggage, parasols and so on, though the camera has been made to sway from side to side to create the illusion of movement."
The film was remade under the same title by Bamforth and Company the same year, although they, according to Michael Brooke of BFI Screenonline, "adopted a rather less stylised and noticeably more passionate approach to the brief encounter of the title;" other imitations include S. Lubin's Love in a Railroad Train (1902) and Edwin S. Porter's What Happened in the Tunnel (1903).
Synopsis
La caméra filme l'entrée d'un tunnel, d'où jaillit un train à vapeur. La caméra se met à avancer elle-même sur la seconde voie, entrant dans le tunnel et dans le noir. Dans un compartiment de 1 classe, un homme lit son journal et fume le cigare. Devant lui, une voyageuse lit une revue. Elle lève le regard vers son voisin qui se penche et la chatouille sous le menton. Charmée, elle rit et il redouble de séduction. Il se débarrasse du journal, se lève et enlève son encombrant chapeau haut de forme. Il dépose un rapide baiser sur la bouche de la jeune dame qui pouffe de rire tandis qu'il se rassied et recoiffe son chapeau. Les rires de sa voisine l'encouragent. Il se lève de nouveau, pose sa coiffe sur la banquette et va embrasser une nouvelle fois la dame, puis se rassied, aplatissant son chapeau qu'il remet aussitôt en forme. Les deux voyageurs se replongent alors dans leur lecture. La caméra sort du tunnel.Actors

An old gentleman is shown on a village street, looking for something through a field glass. Suddenly, he levels the glass on a young couple coming up the road. The girl's shoe string came loose, and her companion volunteers to tie it. Here the scene changes, showing how it looks through the old man's glass. A very pretty ankle at short range. Scene changes back again and shows the old fellow tickled to death over the sight. A coach is coming, and moves out of the frame at one side of the field of view. Soon after, an approaching car veers off course and moves straight to the viewer (the camera). As it approaches, the occupants wave frantically, hoping to stave off the impending collision. At the moment the car fills the entire frame the film cuts to title cards that bear the text "Oh, mother will be pleased".

Une rue calme à l’arrière d’une rangée de maisons. Au fond, une automobile s’engage dans la rue et s’approche de la caméra selon la diagonale du champ. Il s’agit d’un phaéton (véhicule découvert) avec un conducteur et trois dames portant chapeau et crinoline. Elles sont joyeuses et agitent leur écharpe. Arrivé à notre hauteur, l’engin explose (par le trucage de l’arrêt de caméra et ne restent plus qu’une épaisse fumée et quelques débris mécaniques. Un bobby (policier en uniforme) entre dans le champ de la caméra et s’approche pour inspecter le lieu de l’explosion. Il ouvre une lunette d’approche et scrute le ciel au-dessus de sa tête. Soudain, il s’enfuit. Tout ce qui reste des passagères tombe sur la chaussée : robes et membres épars.

It is February 1929 in the city of Chicago, Joe (Tony Curtis) is an irresponsible jazz saxophone player, gambler and ladies' man; his friend Jerry (Jack Lemmon) is a sensible jazz double-bass player.
