Il s'agit d'une adaptation d'une histoire des Contes étranges du studio du bavard de Pu Songling. L'auteur est d'ailleurs le personnage principal (interprété par Jackie Chan) et transformé pour l'occasion en puissant magicien chasseur de démons. D'autres films à succès ont également été tirés de ce recueil du XVIII siècle, parmi eux la trilogie Histoire de fantômes chinois et Painted Skin .
Elle sort le 5 février 2019 (le jour du Nouvel An chinois) en Chine et à Taïwan. Mais malgré ses nombreux effets spéciaux numériques et Jackie Chan dans le rôle principal, elle connaît une première semaine d'exploitation très mitigée avec des recettes médiocres.
Synopsis
La barrière protégeant les humains du royaume des démons étant tombée, des hordes de démons affluent dans le monde humain. Le roi des démons envoie alors le légendaire chasseur de démons Pu Songling (Jackie Chan), un homme de haute culture, intellectuel, sophistiqué et rusé, pour retrouver chacun d’eux. Équipé du pinceau de calligraphie magique du roi, il est aidé dans sa mission par un groupe hétéroclite de gentils monstres. Il fait équipe avec l'officier de police Fei (Austin Lin ) pour résoudre une affaire de disparition en série d'adolescentes dans un village. Il apprend bientôt que les filles ont été enlevées par la belle démone Nie Xiaoqian (Zhong Chuxi ) et un autre démon rusé (Lin Peng ). Tandis que Songling mène son enquête, il rencontre un autre chasseur de démons, Chixia (Ethan Juan ), en pleine bataille avec deux démons. Songling défait le démon rusé et sauve Chixia avant de l'emmener dans son atelier. Il apprend que Xiaoqian était autrefois un homme tombé amoureux du démon Caichen, un serpent au bon cœur. Caichen a donné à Xiaoqian une orbe spirituelle en échange de son ombre, mais l'orbe la transformée en démon. Au lieu de piéger les âmes, Songling doit maintenant en sauver une.Actors

During the Qin dynasty, the general Meng Yi is tasked with escorting Ok-Soo, a Korean princess, back to China to marry the Qin emperor. Along the journey, a Korean warrior attempts to seize her back but Meng Yi saves her. Ok-soo falls in love with Meng Yi and displays her affections for him openly, but Meng honourably rejects her and successfully completes his mission. The Qin emperor becomes critically ill later and he sends Meng Yi to find the elixir of immortality, the only thing that can save his life. The guards escorting the elixir are ambushed by rebels on the orders of the treacherous prince and chancellor. Meng Yi hands over the elixir to his deputy, Nangong Yan, before dying in the ensuing battle. Although Nangong Yan manages to bring the elixir to the emperor, the prince and chancellor wanted Nangong Yan and Ok-soo to test the validity of the elixir and force them to consume the elixir, condemning them to imprisonment in the Qin emperor's mausoleum for eternity.

Eddie Yang (Jackie Chan) is a Hong Kong police officer cooperating with Interpol in the capture of a crime lord named AJ "Snakehead" Staul (Julian Sands). Snakehead procures an ancient book from a Chinese bookstore keeper, which tells the story of a boy being chosen every thousand years to bind the two halves of a legendary medallion. In Hong Kong, Eddie and Interpol agent Arthur Watson (Lee Evans) lead a raid to capture Snakehead and his men, who are about to kidnap the boy, named Jai (Alex Bao). Eddie and the agents fight off Snakehead's men, infiltrating the temple containing Jai. Jai is saved but Snakehead eludes them. Two weeks later Snakehead captures Jai aboard a cargo boat in Hong Kong. Eddie and a team of Hong Kong police engage and defeat several of Snakehead's men, but Snakehead escapes with Jai to Dublin, Ireland.

L.A.P.D. Detective Carter is directing traffic. South Boston teenager Jason Tripitikas (Michael Angarano) is a fan of martial arts films and he awakens from a dream of a battle between the Monkey King (Jet Li) and celestial soldiers in the clouds. On his way home, Jason is harassed by some hooligans, whose leader Lupo attempts to use him to help them rob the shop-owner Hop. Hop tries to fight the thieves with the staff, but is shot and wounded by Lupo. He tells Jason to deliver the staff to its rightful owner and Jason flees with the staff. He is cornered on the rooftop by the hooligans and almost shot too, but he is pulled off the roof by the staff and falls backwards onto the asphalt.

In western China, 48 BC, a security company under China's current government called the Silk Road Protection Squad is committed towards stopping battles and promoting the idea of peace. Huo An (Chan), the captain, successfully averts a battle between the Indians and Huns. The group returns to their unnamed home city, where Huo An's wife serves as a schoolteacher for orphans. However, the government uncovers evidence that someone in the group is corrupt, causing the entire group to be sentenced to construction work at Goose Gate, a ruined fortress. Once they arrive, the group pays respects at the shrine of a fallen Chinese general, since they originally were child-slaves of Hun descent, but later the general had rescued them.

Bob Ho (Jackie Chan) is a CIA undercover agent who decides to retire after moving next to the beautiful Gillian (Amber Valletta) who has three children from previous relationships. Bob and Gillian then start dating but Bob feels he should tell Gillian about his job. Gillian then goes to visit her father in the hospital and leaves Bob to take care of her kids (Madeline Carroll, Will Shadley and Alina Foley).
