A man is discovered breaking into his own jewelery shop in the dead of night. Questioned closely, it is discovered that his wife is being held hostage at their home by Steve, a brutal extortionist who demands the diamonds in the shop's safe in exchange for the woman's life. After Steve kills the family maid, FBI agent Warren Stantin (Sidney Poitier) hands over the diamonds, but Steve kills the jeweller's wife anyway, and escapes. Feeling that he has failed, Stantin becomes obsessed with finding Steve, and he chases Steve into the rugged forests of the state of Washington, where Steve joins up with a group of sportsmen who plan to trek into the wilderness on a fishing trip. Steve's plan is to kill them and force their guide, Sarah (Kirstie Alley), to lead him through the wilderness to the Canadian border.

Joe Bomowski (Sylvester Stallone) is a tough cop. When his seemingly frail mother Tutti (Estelle Getty) comes to stay with him and progressively interferes in his life, it drives him crazy. After cleaning his gun with bleach and finding out she ruined it, she buys him an illegal MAC-10 machine pistol, where she witnesses the murder of one of the men that sells her the gun. While taken to the police station, she refuses to work with and starts poking around in his police cases. Au Nicaragua en 1979, le journaliste-photographe Russell Price couvre la guerre civile opposant les sandinistes au président Anastasio Somoza. Ses amis, le chef d'antenne Alex Grazier et la journaliste de la radio Claire, l'accompagnent. Au moment où ils arrivent, les sandinistes frappent même jusque dans la capitale, Managua. Au fil des jours, Russell en vient à se poser des questions sur la façon de couvrir cette guerre, lorsqu'il prend conscience de la brutalité de l'armée somoziste vis-à-vis de la population. Lui et Claire sont bientôt approchés par les sandinistes afin de photographier Rafael, leur leader, dont le gouvernement nicaraguayen vient d'annoncer la mort. Rafael est en réalité bel et bien mort, mais les guérilleros veulent démontrer, par une photographie, qu'il est toujours vivant afin de finir la guerre à leur avantage. Après quelques hésitations, Russell accepte et, le lendemain, la photo du chef sandiniste est diffusée dans tout le pays, ce qui déstabilise quelque peu le gouvernement Somoza. Le régime commence à se poser des questions sur la neutralité de la presse. Alex Grazier est bientôt arrêté puis abattu par la Guardia. Russell Price, qui a réussi à photographier l'assassinat, parvient à rendre publiques les photos et le gouvernement américain abandonne toute aide au régime somoziste. Les sandinistes entrent en vainqueurs à Managua et le dictateur fuit le pays.

The film opens with the hijacker leaving a plane by its aft airway on a clear day, parachuting into a forest in Washington. The man is later identified as Jim Meade (Treat Williams), an ex-Army man with big dreams. Meade escapes the manhunt using a jeep he had previously hidden in the forest and concealing the money in the carcass of a deer. He eventually meets up with his estranged wife Hannah (Kathryn Harrold), who operates a river rafting company. Meanwhile, Meade is being hunted by Bob Gruen (Robert Duvall), an insurance investigator who was Meade's sergeant in the Army, and Meade's Army buddy Remson (Paul Gleason), who listened when Meade had talked about hijacking a plane.

In the near future, the cloning of animals and human organs has become routine. Cloning entire humans, however, is prohibited by what are known as "Sixth Day" laws. Billionaire Michael Drucker, owner of cloning corporation Replacement Technologies, hires charter pilot Adam Gibson and partner Hank Morgan for a ski trip. Due to Drucker's prominence, the two must first undergo blood and eye tests to verify their aptitude. On the day of Drucker's arrival, Adam finds that his family dog Oliver has died, and Hank offers to fly Drucker instead to allow Adam time to have the pet cloned.
