The film follows the story of a Lebanese boy that is forced to leave his homeland, involved in a war that erupted in the Middle East, and migrate with the family to Brazil.

Synopsis
The Lebanese teenager Tarik leaves his hometown in search of a better life in Brazil. On the journey by ship, he befriended other young Arabs and Syrians, but when they reached the country, each went to a different way. Partie gravir le Cho Oyu, dans l'Himalaya, Johanna, étudiante en médecine à Berlin, tombe dans une crevasse et découvre deux enfants morts. Sauvée par ses coéquipiers tibétains, elle est reconduite dans un monastère et fait la connaissance de Tempa, un garçon de huit ans. À la demande de ses sauveurs, Johanna accepte de le conduire jusqu'à Lhassa pour confier l'enfant à Meto. Une fois arrivée à destination, elle doit cette fois emmener un groupe d'enfants vers l'Inde pour qu'ils aient une vie meilleure auprès du dalaï-lama. Avec des policiers à leurs trousses, ils entament un long voyage, en passant notamment par le col de Nangpa La.

In 1982, Johnny and Sarah Sullivan and their daughters Christy and Ariel enter the United States on a tourist visa via Canada, where Johnny was working as an actor. The family settles in New York City, in a rundown Hell's Kitchen tenement occupied by drug addicts, transvestites, and a reclusive Nigerian artist/photographer named Mateo Kuamey. Hanging over the family is the death of their five-year-old son Frankie, who died from a brain tumor. The devout Roman Catholic Johnny questions God and has lost any ability to feel true emotions, which has affected his relationship with his family. Christy believes she has been granted three wishes by her dead brother, which she only uses at times of near-dire consequences for the family as they try to survive in New York.

Okwe is an illegal Nigerian immigrant to the United Kingdom who drives a cab in London during the day and works at the front desk of a hotel at night. The hotel is staffed with many immigrants, both legal and illegal. Okwe keeps himself awake by chewing khat, an herbal stimulant. A doctor in his home country, he was forced to flee after being falsely accused of murdering his wife. In London, he is pressed into giving medical treatment to other poor immigrants, including fellow cab drivers with venereal diseases. Carlos Galindo (Demián Bichir) works as a gardener with Blasco Martinez (Joaquín Cosio) in Los Angeles, California. Blasco wants to return to Mexico and continually tries to persuade Carlos to purchase his business from him, which includes the work truck and gardening tools. Carlos's son Luis (José Julián) is in high school and is dating Ruthie Valdez (Chelsea Rendon), the niece of a local gang leader. In Montreal, an elementary school teacher hangs herself. Bashir Lazhar, an Algerian immigrant, then offers his services to replace her, claiming to have taught in his home country. Desperate to fill the position, the principal takes him at his word and gives him the job. He gets to know his students despite the cultural gap evident from the very first day of class and despite his difficulty adapting to the school system's constraints. As the children try to move on from their former teacher's suicide, nobody at the school is aware of Bashir's painful past, or his precarious status as a refugee. His wife, who was a teacher and writer, died along with the couple's daughter and son in an arson attack. The murderers were angered by her last book, in which she pointed a finger at those responsible for the country's reconciliation, which had led to the liberation of many perpetrators of huge crimes. The film goes on to explore Bashir's relationships with the students and faculty, and how the students come to grips with their former teacher's suicide. One student, Alice, writes an assignment on the death of their teacher, revealing the deep pain and confusion felt by each of the students.
