The Law of the Great Northwest est un film américain réalisé par Raymond Wells, sorti en 1918.

Synopsis

Hal Sinclair tient le comptoir commercial de Fort Roscher dans les Territoires du Nord-Ouest canadien et en profite pour tromper les trappeurs. Mais un jour un groupe de marchands de fourrure arrive en ville. Après qu'ils ont presque tous été tués par Mont Brennan, l'homme de main de Sinclair, l'Officier Jamison de la Police montée du Nord-Ouest est envoyé sur place. Charles Morin, un riche homme d'affaires, arrive lui aussi à Fort Roscher dans l'intention de se lancer dans le commerce de fourrures. Morin tombe bientôt amoureux de Marie Monest, la fille d'un trappeur. Sinclair, qui lui aussi est tombé amoureux de la jeune femme, demande à Brennan de tuer le jeune homme, mais Marie entend leur conversation. Elle tire sur Brennan au moment où celui-ci visait Morin et le tue. Elle est accusée de meurtre mais, avec l'aide de Jamison, lui aussi amoureux d'elle, elle est disculpée.

As summarized in a film publication, Aunt Abigail (Chapman) and her adopted daughter Sally (Eddy) are threatened with the loss of their home through foreclosure of a mortgage held by Solon Hammerhead (Mong). The only outlets available are either for Abigail to marry the old villain Salon or for Sally to marry his mean, scheming son Bruce (Housman). To prevent Aunt Abigail from losing her home, Sally is about to agree to marry the son, even though she loves the hired hand Joel (Butler). She has only a few days to decide before the mortgage falls due. That night former jockey Tim Vail breaks into the home looking for food, and sweet Aunt Abigail gives him a job on the farm. Tim discovers that Abigail's horse "Cold Molasses" is a born racer, and Tim and Joel get permission to train the horse for the big $3000 race at the County Fair, which takes place the day the mortgage comes due. The Hammerheads, discovering that the horse would likely beat their entry, attempt to keep her out of the race by setting fire to the barn, but Tim rescues the horse. The big race starts with Cold Molasses in the lead. At the last second the Hammerhead horse passes her and it looks like the house will be gone, but then the Hammerhead entry is disqualified for foul play. The winnings pay off the mortgage, Joel and Sally are happy, and even Aunt Abigail finds a suitor.

Les collectionneurs d'antiquités Wilbur Talbot et John Wilton sont amis jusqu'à ce que Wilbur obtienne un vase chinois que John convoitait depuis longtemps. Après avoir dilapidé son argent avec sa maîtresse Lola Monroe, Robert Lathrop supplie sa femme Mary de l'aider à obtenir un prêt du roi de l'acier Nicholas Eyre, un ami de feu son père. Following David's marriage, Foo Chang tries to bribe David to help him bring a cargo of opium into the city, informing him that he is of mixed race. David takes his infant son, wife and Li Clung to Alaska. Li Clung kills Foo Chang and reveals the ethnicity of David's mother.
