Doris Pawn (December 29, 1894 – March 30, 1988) was an American actress who appeared in films of the silent era.

Biography

Pawn was first married to director Rex Ingram, but that union ended in divorce. She married secondly to Paul Reiners in 1928. Her last marriage was to Samuel William Dunaway in 1937; the couple remained married until his death in 1969. She had no children.

William Fielding (John Gilbert) lives in Shanghai with his young son David. Foo Chang (George Siegmann), a trader, loves the woman who cares for David and kills Fielding because he thinks she is the boy's mother. Li Clung (William V. Mong) takes David to his grandfather in San Francisco where he grows up and inherits the Fielding estate. Following David's marriage, Foo Chang tries to bribe David to help him bring a cargo of opium into the city, informing him that he is of mixed race. David takes his infant son, wife and Li Clung to Alaska. Li Clung kills Foo Chang and reveals the ethnicity of David's mother.

The film follows gangster Blizzard (Lon Chaney), whose legs were mistakenly amputated at a young age. A romance between King George III of England and a Quaker girl, Catherine, who becomes his morganatic wife, forms the early part of the story. Catherine is really half Indian, being the daughter of a French adventurer and an Indian woman, adopted and brought to England by a Quaker voyager. The hardships of the American colonists are shown and their rebellion against the English rule. In this rebellion, Catherine sees a chance to avenge herself upon the King, who has legally married a German princess. She goes to America and becomes a power over a tribe of Indians. One of her aids is her own brother, who had been adopted by a colonist. Brother and sister are unaware of the relationship until the close of the story. The gallant fight which the Americans under General Washington wage against the English troops and the Indians under Catherine's lead, form a thrilling phase of the story and the chief incidents with which every American is familiar are dramatically set forth. In addition, there are several minor plots and romances, some of which end happily, others tragically, when the war is over and the fight for freedom won.
