Ouvrier du bâtiment sur un chantier en banlieue parisienne, Mehdi emprunte l'autobus pour rentrer chez lui après son travail. Souhaitant descendre alors que le véhicule est à l'arrêt dans un embouteillage, le conducteur refuse : en redémarrant, l'autobus heurte la voiture qui le précède. Le chauffeur du bus s'en prend à Mehdi qu'il tient pour responsable de l'incident, prétextant qu'il est interdit de « parler au machiniste ». Mehdi est mis en cause devant le tribunal et son avocate tente d'attirer l'attention sur les conditions de vie des travailleurs immigrés.

The Driver (Ryan O'Neal) - real name unknown - has made a career out of stealing cars to use as getaway vehicles in big-time robberies all over Los Angeles. Hot on the Driver's trail is the Detective (Bruce Dern), a conceited and otherwise-nameless cop who has his own name for the Driver: "Cowboy." Since the Driver has never been caught, the Detective goes to ever-increasing lengths to bring him down. Ultimately, the Detective sets up a bank job in order to bait and trap the Driver. Even when said plan threatens to wreck the Detective's own career, he remains steadfast in his obsession to bust the Driver.

The mainly evil Mantis Fist school and the righteous Eagle Claw have fought out a bitter rivalry over many years. The culmination in this progressive clash is the death of the Eagle's Claw school master due to a severe beating by his savage, eccentric rival. With the school now in turmoil, the dying master leaves the responsibilities of his legacy to his second most senior pupil (Wong Tao) while ignoring the quietly seething senior student (Chi Kwan Chun). The forgotten man cannot contain his rage for long though and storms off to the Mantis Fist school out of spite.
