Synopsis

In 1952, Deputy Sheriff Lou Ford (Casey Affleck) is a pillar of the community in his small west Texas town — patient, dependable, and well-liked. Beneath his pleasant facade, however, he is a sociopath with violent sexual tastes. As a teenager, Lou was caught raping a five-year-old girl in the back of a parked car by his adopted brother Mike, who pleaded guilty to the crime and served prison time to protect Lou. After being released, Mike was hired by the construction firm of Chester Conway (Ned Beatty). Mike died on the job after slipping and falling off a beam through several floors in a building under construction. Lou believes that Conway planned the accident.

The film tells the modern love story set over a period of 12 months in London, England, of a young couple: Matt, a British climatologist, and Lisa, an American exchange student. The story is framed in a personal review from Matt's perspective when he is working in Antarctica. Their main common interest is a passion for live music and they frequently attend rock concerts together. The film depicts the couple, or Matt alone, watching nine songs at Brixton Academy and other concert venues. It also shows their weekend getaway into the countryside, and their travels around London. In an attempt to impress his American girlfriend, Mischa, actor Steve Coogan accepts a commission from the Sunday newspaper, The Observer, to undertake a tour of leading restaurants in the north of England for a column in their monthly food magazine. However, when Mischa, who was expected to accompany Coogan on the tour, insists that they take a break from their relationship and returns to America, Coogan is obliged to search for another companion. After finding that other friends are "busy", he decides with feelings of some ambivalence to invite his former colleague, Rob Brydon, with whom he shares an uneasily competitive relationship. In the course of the trip, they eat a series of gourmet meals and visit sites linked to the Romantic poets Coleridge and Wordsworth, Coogan has casual sex with a couple of women working at their hotels, and the two men indulge in various forms of one-upmanship, including exchanging impersonations of famous actors such as Anthony Hopkins, Sean Connery, Woody Allen and most notably Michael Caine. At the end of the trip, Brydon returns to a nondescript suburban home and his evidently loving wife and child, while Coogan comes back to a glamorous but lonely riverside apartment: the closing shots show him staring broodingly out of the window. In the end he calls back his agent to reject a deal for the lead role in a US drama to remain close with his family.

The film is based on the story of Erzsébet Bathory, a Hungarian countess in the 16th and 17th centuries. Her story takes place in a part of the Kingdom of Hungary that is now Slovakia. In this retelling, the Countess is a healer who conducts medical experiments and rudimentary autopsies in a "hospital" beneath her castle. She forms a relationship with a reputed witch, Darvulia, who saves her from poisoning. The witch promises Erzsebet a son and eternal beauty. In return, Erzsebet must sacrifice both love and her reputation. Darvulia becomes Erzsebet's companion. Meanwhile, maidens in the area have been dying of seemingly unrelated causes, and Erzsebet is seen bathing in a large tub of red liquid as the girls' now-mutilated corpses are buried nearby. Two monks later conclude that the water is not blood but is simply colored red by herbs.
