During the siege of Richmond, Virginia, in the American Civil War, POW Capt. Cyrus Harding escapes from his Confederate captors in a rather unusual way – by hijacking an observation balloon. In his escape, Harding is accompanied by sailor Pencroft, his nephew Bert, writer Gideon, loyal soldier Neb, and a dog. A hurricane blows the balloon off course, and the group eventually crash-lands on a cliff-bound, volcanic, uncharted (and fictitious) island, located in the South Pacific, with very unusual inhabitants. They name it "Lincoln Island" in honour of American President Abraham Lincoln.

A brief opening prologue describes how in 1909 Robert Peary had trouble reaching the North Pole, while postulating that Peary would have been amazed to see how in just a few decades the very same pole had become a major thoroughfare for civilian and military shipping; a futuristic prediction of cargo-carrying atomic submarines then follows. One of those submarines is destroyed by a mysterious undersea light. The loss of this and several other cargo ships alarms the world. Governments temporarily close the polar route and convene an emergency meeting at The Pentagon.![Captain Video, Master of the Stratosphere](/imagesen/small/87730.jpg)

Superman is sent to Earth by his parents just as the planet Krypton blows up and is later raised as Clark Kent by a farm couple. They discover that he has great powers so they send him off to use his powers to help those in need. After his foster parents die, the Man of Steel heads to Metropolis under the bespectacled guise of Kent and joins the staff of the Daily Planet in order to be close to the news. Soon after he is sent out to get the scoop on a new rock that a man has found that he calls Kryptonite and Clark passes out, the director thinks that he died but when he sat up, he was wrong. Then and there Superman discovered that his weakness is Kryptonite. Whenever emergencies happen, he responds in his true identity as Superman.
