The story begins in Rwanda where a football fanatic Dudu Kayenzi is teaching a group of children how to make an "organic football" using a UN condom, plastic bag and string. Meanwhile, his best friend and football prodigy Fabrice longs to pursue his ambition of becoming an association football legend and is seen breaking the local record for the most continuous football kick-ups. When Fabrice is offered the chance to audition for the opening ceremony of the 2010 Football World Cup in South Africa, he fabricates a plan to sneak past his strict, wealthy parents with Dudu and Dudu's sister Beatrice. Beatrice wishes to become a doctor and find a cure for AIDS. Fabrice tries to express his love of football to his mother, but she simply replies "Africa doesn't need dreams, it needs to wake up".![Virile Games](/imagesen/small/145329.jpg)

Hornby adapted the book for the screen and fictionalized the story, concentrating on Arsenal's First Division championship-winning season in 1988–89 and its effect on the protagonist's romantic relationship. Firth plays Paul Ashworth, the character based on Hornby, a teacher at a school in North London, and his burgeoning romance with Sarah Hughes (Ruth Gemmell), a new teacher who joins Ashworth's school. The film culminates with the real life events of Arsenal's match against title rivals Liverpool in the final game of the season on 26 May 1989, a Michael Thomas last-minute goal giving Arsenal the 2–0 win they needed to win the title.![Gregory's Two Girls](/imagesen/small/114944.jpg)

Ciccio Ingrassetti is the PR of a milanese pharmaceutical firm which is trying to promote its products through the football team of its sicilian branch. To guarantee success, the owner asks Ciccio to secure the talents of an innovative coach, a "magician" (just like Inter Milan coach Helenio Herrera was dubbed at the time). Ciccio, totally unaware of the subtleties of football (but wary to confess his ignorance of the matter to his boss) misinterprets his orders and hires K.K., an impostor 'clairvoyant' who actually tries to help the team through his 'spells'. Hijinks and mishaps soon ensue.
