As a child Juan Gallardo (Rex Downing – young boy) wants only to become a bullfighter like his dead father. At Fort King, Florida, in 1835, Lt. Lance Caldwell is charged with the murder of a sentry. At his court martial, he recounts the story of the fragile peace between the settlers and the native Seminole Indians and how that peace is threatened by the strict fort commander, Maj. Harlan Degan who wants to wipe out the natives. Caldwell’s childhood sweetheart, Revere Muldoon, meets with Osceola, a Seminole chief and old friend of Lt. Caldwell's. Through respect for Caldwell, Osceola comes to the fort under a flag of truce, but is imprisoned by Maj. Degan. Osceola dies while in captivity and Caldwell is accused of his murder and jailed. Eventually the truth comes out and the Seminole rescue Caldwell from his prison.

During World War II, retired millionaire Benjamin Dingle (Charles Coburn) arrives in Washington, D.C. as an adviser on the housing shortage and finds that his hotel suite will not be available for two days. He sees an ad for a roommate and talks the reluctant young woman, Connie Milligan (Jean Arthur), into letting him sublet half of her apartment. Rusty (Rita Hayworth), a chorus girl working at a nightclub run by her boyfriend Danny McGuire (Gene Kelly), is given a chance for stardom by the wealthy magazine editor John Coudair (Otto Kruger), who years earlier had been in love with her grandmother, Maribelle Hicks. Offered an opportunity to be a highly paid cover girl, Rusty would faithfully remain with her nightclub act if only Danny would ask her. He doesn't want to stand in her way, so he picks an argument to send her packing. Bill Jordan, propriétaire d'un ranch, traite son neveu Scott comme un fils, son fils Daniel ayant fui la maison des années auparavant. Un jour, Scott et Bill sont invités chez des voisins pour le retour de Martha Baxter et de sa fille Cindy. Daniel et son ami Roy arrivent, accompagnés de plusieurs juments et d'un étalon noir qu'il dit avoir achetés. Incapable de dresser l'étalon, Daniel est sur le point de le tuer quand Scott lui offre de l'acheter pour 30 dollars. Scott montre beaucoup de patience et finalement arrive à apprivoiser le cheval, qu'il a appelé Midnight. Un jour, alors qu'il est en train de trier des papiers, le shérif trouve un avis à propos d'un vol de chevaux, et se pose des questions quant à la marque sur les chevaux de Daniel. Pour éviter les soupçons, Daniel ordonne à Roy de se débarrasser de Midnight. Après avoir été roué de coups par Roy, le cheval piétine son assaillant jusqu'à le tuer. De peur que Bill veuille tuer l'étalon, Scott cache Midnight dans les collines où, avec l'aide de Cindy, il soigne les blessures du cheval. Plus tard, le shérif convainc Bill que Roy a provoqué l'attaque qui l'a tué, et Bill regagne la confiance de Scott en tuant un lion des montagnes qui menaçait le garçon et son cheval. Daniel finit par se rendre, les charges contre lui sont abandonnées et il récupère les chevaux, sauf Midnight, qui reste avec Scott.
