Synopsis
Nicolas Dange, gestionnaire d'une société de sa femme Florence, demande le divorce et renonce à sa position, car il est tombé amoureux de sa nouvelle secrétaire. Il trouve un nouveau travail en Afrique mais ne désire pas emmener sa nouvelle épouse avec lui. Elle insiste, il cède. Son adjoint Gilbert tombe amoureux de sa femme à la suite des confidences que celui-ci lui a faites les soirs de cafard dans la brousse. Malade, il rentre en France et devient l'amant de la jeune femme qui lui a cédé, lasse de sa solitude. Le mari revient aussi, l'épouse bouleversée obtient son pardon et le jeune homme se donne la mort.Actors

1692, Salem, Massachusetts. John Proctor is the only member in the town's assembly who resists the attempts of the rich to gain more wealth on the expense of the poor farmers, thus incurring the wrath of deputy governor Danforth. Proctor's sternly puritanical wife, Elizabeth, is sick and has not shared his bed for months, and he was seduced by his maid, Abigail. When he ends his affair with her, Abigail and several other local girls turn to slave Tituba. Reverend Parris catches the girls in the forest as they partake in what appears to be witchcraft. Abigail and the rest deny it, saying that they have been bewitched. A wave of hysteria engulfs the town, and Danforth uses the girls' accusations to instigate a series of trials, during which his political enemies are accused of heresy and executed. When Abigail blames Elizabeth Proctor, the latter rejects John's pleas to defraud Abigail as an adulteress. Eventually, both Proctors are put on trial and refuse to sign a confession. The townspeople rebel, but not before John is hanged with other defendants; his pregnant wife has been spared. Elizabeth tells the angry crowd to let Abigail live.

En renonçant à ses ambitions artistiques pour épouser Edgar, Théa se justifie auprès de leur ami commun Kurt : Edgar, capitaine dans l'armée impériale, a de l'ambition pour deux. Peu après, Edgar est affecté à la direction d'une prison bâtie en forteresse sur une île rocheuse de la mer Adriatique. 25 ans plus tard, leur situation est un échec dont ils souffrent tous les deux. Théa est aigrie par cette vie perdue dans l'enfermement auprès d'Edgar, qui est devenu un officier autoritaire, alcoolique, puisant dans la caisse de la garnison. La réception organisée pour leurs noces d'argent est sinistre et reste déserte d'invités. Leur fille de 20 ans est amoureuse d'un prisonnier dont Edgar avait fait son ordonnance. Grace à elle l'homme s'évade et elle ne songe qu'à partir à son tour pour le rejoindre. La crise éclate au moment où l'ami de jadis Kurt, devenu médecin militaire, est nommé dans la même forteresse. Les deux époux se déchirent, leur fille de 20 ans est sur le point de les quitter, Kurt est compromis à son tour dans ce combat de haine. Car comme le dit Théa, leur couple est maintenant uni par la haine réciproque.

Liliom Zadowski is a barker at Madame Muscat's carousel. A rival barker named Hollinger tries to get Liliom in trouble by telling the jealous Mme. Philippe Lutcher, an anarchist, fires a shot at Clara Stuart, a famous stage and screen actress, but only wounds her. The star, through affectation and curiosity to know his motives, pleads in his favour at his trial, but he rebuffs her pity. After he has served 18 months in prison, they meet and fall in love. Philippe however does not really believe in Clara's sincerity, and when he sees incidents from their lives becoming part of her latest film, he leaves her.
