Synopsis
En 1880, dans la région de Ferrare, la famille Scacerni exploite, selon des méthodes ancestrales, un moulin flottant sur le Pô. Pour tromper le fisc, Princivalle, le chef de famille, truque son compteur... Sa fille Berta, est fiancée à Orbino, un paysan influencé par des idéaux révolutionnaires. Un riche propriétaire foncier, surnommé Il Clapassòn, modernise son exploitation en achetant une batteuse à vapeur. Ce qui déclenche une grève des paysans pauvres. Les Scarceni ne s'associent pas à ce mouvement, qui finit par être durement réprimé. Princivalle, craignant d'être arrêté pour fraude, incendie alors son moulin... De plus, imaginant sa fille abandonné par Orbino, il tue celui-ci. Il est alors emprisonné.Actors

Variety Lights is a bittersweet drama about a group of second-rate theatrical performers on tour. The actors, dancers, and performers struggle to make money from town to town, playing to minimal crowds, while the ageing manager of the company falls in love with a newcomer, to the chagrin of his faithful mistress Melina Amour, played by Fellini's real-life wife, Giulietta Masina. The movie begins with a sold-out vaudeville show in a small Italian town. A young woman, Liliana, played by Carla Del Poggio, sits in the appreciate crowd, enraptured by the performers. That evening, as the troupe boards a train, with two of the performers forced to sit in the train toilet to evade paying the fare, the young woman also boards the train. During the night, she unsuccessfully requests the head of the group, Checco Dal Monte, played by Peppino De Filippo, to join the group. In the morning when the group realizes it does not have enough money to pay for a carriage, Liliana hires the carriage with the last of her money. This saves the group several miles of walking and leads to them accepting her. At the performance that evening, a sparse and hostile crowd mocks each performer in turn. When the local promoter notices that the crowd responds approvingly to Liliana, he interrupts the performance and directs the group to feature the newcomer. This leads to repeat performances over the next two days to increasingly larger crowds. After the third and final performance, a local wealthy man invites the group to his mansion for dinner. That night Checco realizes he desires Liliana. In the morning, as the group walks towards the train station, Checco abandons his mistress Melina to walk alone with Liliana. When the group arrives in Rome, Checco leaves it in order to form his own troupe featuring Liliana. However, as this new group practices, Liliana arrives to tell Checco she has signed with a competitor. Checco collapses. The movie then follows Liliana in her brilliant debut in a minor role, hinting that she has a bright future ahead of her. The movie ends with Liliana, sporting an expensive fur coat, boarding a first-class train carriage en route to Milan. On the adjoining track, Checco and his old troupe board a train for Formaggio. In the final scene, the two trains leave the station as Checco, reunited with Melina, begins to flirt with a young woman who sits across the aisle from him. This suggest he is about to begin the cycle once again.

A contingent of Italian prisoners of war arrive on a train from Germany after World War II to Turin. The city where Ernesto (played by Nazzari) lives has been bombed, his mother is dead and his sister has gone missing. State help for returning veterans is scant and bureaucracy rampant. Ernesto tries to get an honest job, but fails. After finding a lost purse and meeting the dangerously seductive Lidia (played by Anna Magnani), Ernesto discovers the whereabouts of his lost sister (played by Carla del Poggio), who has turned to prostitution to survive during the war years. He unwittingly causes her death, kills her pimp, escapes capture with Lidia's help and joins her gangster band.

Thirteen-year-old Edmund Kohler lives in devastated, post-World War II Berlin with his ailing, bedridden father and his adult siblings, Eva and Karl-Heinz. Eva manages to obtain cigarettes by going out with soldiers of the Allied forces, but she resists her friends' advice to prostitute herself. Karl-Heinz is the older son who fought in the war and is a burden to the struggling family, refusing to register with the police and get a ration card because he is afraid of what would happen if they found out he fought to the bitter end. In 1945, Benito Mussolini goes to Milan to talk with Archbishop Alfredo Ildefonso Schuster in order that he help him to escape from Italy. The Republic of Salò, the last bastion of fascism, is decaying, and the Americans, along with the partisans are about to win over Milan. Mussolini flees, pursued by his lover Claretta Petacci, and manages to get to the northern village of Dongo. There he clashes with the Germans, who order him to disguise himself as an officer of Germany rather than be captured by the partisans. Mussolini accepts without objection, always hoping for a revolt of his loyal fascists, but they are in jeopardy. When Mussolini's recognized, the leader of the partisans: Walter Audisio would like to first give him to the Americans, so that Mussolini is regularly processed. But the war crimes of the Duce are too many, and so Audisio finally decides to shoot him in front of the Villa Belmone in the village of Giulino, with his female companion.

En octobre 1943, le commandement allemand de la place de Rome ordonne que la communauté juive de la ville lui livre, dans un délai de vingt-quatre heures, cinquante kilos d'or : faute de quoi deux cents otages seront fusillés. Une rafle est organisée autour du Portico d'Ottavia, dans laquelle deux mille juifs seront capturés et dirigés vers les camps d'extermination nazis. Le film conte, en parallèle, une intrigue amoureuse entre Giulia, fille d'un professeur juif, et Massimo, étudiant de confession catholique. A woman spy and some male agents working for the Germans during World War I land at night near the British naval base at Scapa Flow, from a U-boat. The British, led by Col. Foreman, ambush the landing party, capturing two of the men, but the woman gets away. Foreman fakes the execution of one of the spies, thus tricking the second one, Meyer, into becoming a double agent in the hopes of using him to capture his woman accomplice, whom Meyer identifies under the codename Fraulein Doktor. Fraulein Doktor is portrayed as a brilliant spy who stole a formula for a nerve gas which the Germans used to great effect against the Allies on the battlefield.
